The Amygdala • The limbic system neural center in the brain • Plays a key role in fear • It receives input from the anterior cingulate cortex- a higher-level center that processes emotion • Sends signals to areas of the body that produce symptoms of extreme fear -such as diarrhea and shortness of breath

  3. The Amygdala cont… • Involved in associating emotions, like fear, with certain stimuli • People repeatedly blasted by a horn after seeing an image will eventually react fearfully to the image without the horn • Rats given a drug that deactivates their amygdala show no fear learning • This proves that fear can be learned -----Insert link to little Albert

  4. Phobias • Above average fears of an object, situation, or idea • People can be afraid of almost anything; • Phobia • Phobia • Phobia • Phobia • Phobia

  5. The Effects Of Our Genes • While experiences shape our fears so do our genes • Identical twins can be used t prove that our genes influence our levels of fear • It has been found that one twin’s level of fearfulness is similar to the other’s • Even when raised apart from each other identical twins show a similarity in fear level
