  2. Outline of Presentation • Objectives of SDP activities • Achievements • Data utilization workshops • Regular dissemination of demographic and socio-economic information • Discussion

  3. Objectives of SDP activities ...are to provide and improve the quality and availability of information produced by national statistical systems (NSS). Specifically, the activities aim to: • build and supplement the analytical skills of national statistical & planning offices across the NSSs; • improve the quality of social and economic statistics released by NSOs/NSSs; • produce outputs that meet the information needs of national policy makers & planners; • provide useful information for regional and international stakeholders; • reinforce international best practice in demographical/statistical methods; • develop professional standards in the presentation of official statistics.

  4. Achievements The period 2007-2010 saw the production of 15 census or survey reports, demographic profiles, population atlases, posters, pocket books or survey fact sheets for 11 PICTs (Cook Islands, Guam, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Caledonia, Niue, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Wallis and Futuna) SPC emphasizes the importance of analytical reports being prepared in close collaboration with national counterparts to ensure the transfer of knowledge - improvement in analytical methodologies, and training in such areas as report writing, and data utilization.

  5. Data utilization workshops Following the completion of a census or survey report, countries are strongly encouraged to organize a data utilization workshop in order to raise awareness and encourage utilization of available current and up-to date information. The objectives of such workshops are to: • highlight impacts of major findings of census and survey data for different aspects and sectors of society; • emphasize the importance of specific population, economic and social concepts and indicators and how these relate to policy formulation and monitoring of developments and trends; • teach calculation of socio-economic and demographic indicators through the provision of practical exercises.

  6. Regular dissemination of demographic and socio-economic information - Estimates and projections of population size and structure, as well as its growth components fertility, mortality and migration - National economic and education statistics as well as administrative data are collected and disseminated, including the calculation of socio-economic indicators - Maintaining a regional development indicator database, that allows the computing of the MDGs and Human Development Indices (HDI) for PICTs - In collaboration with Family Planning International New Zealand, SDP calculated a Reproductive Risk Index (RRI) for PICT. The RRIs measure the overall reproductive health of women. - Collection of papers and presentations of SDP staff at regional meetings, workshops and seminars - National publications that SDP was not directly involved in SDP website (www.spc.int/sdp), PRISM (www.spc.int/prism/index.htm).

  7. Discussion • Are the overall needs of NSOs/NSSs in the area of demographic and socio-economic analysis being met by SDP? • Are published reports produced in a timely manner (drafting, editing, lay-out, printing)? • What is the need for regular technical workshops (e.g. population projections; CSPro data processing; economic classifications; questionnaire design) on a regional or sub-regional basis to complement and enhance national technical capacity building.
