  7. Your Website • When choosing a host consider the following: • What country do they reside in? • How are they rated among other hosting sites? • How much space and transfer space do they offer? • Do they have on-line help? • Do they offer on-site page development software? • What tools do they offer?

  8. Your Website • Hosting fees can be: • Free (always a caveat) • http://www.doteasy.com/Services/WebHosting/ • $35.00 yr. domain fees • About $99 to $120 a Year • http://www.bluehost.com/ • Usually includes Domain fees • Must be paid a yr. at a time

  9. What is a domain? A name by which a computer connected to the Internet is identified. A typical domain name looks like this: www.ibm.com. • The "www." refers to the fact that this computer is connected to the World Wide Web; • the middle portion of a domain name is usually the name of the company that owns the computer—in this case,IMB ; • the final portion of a domain name tells you what kind of site is served by this machine—in this case, ‘.com’ means this is a commercial site • (other types of sites are: .org, .net, .biz, .info, .name, .us, .ca, .eu, .tv, .ws, .mobi. For more info go to: www.visionsofadonai.com/onrampglossary.html

  10. Remember to SAVE your pages… • To the hard drive • To your USB memory • You could keep an entire hugemongous site on less than 200mb! • To a CD-RW disc • Upload to your secure site using FTP.

  11. Organize – Plan? • Decide what will be the intro to your site, how it will look, wht will the ‘theme’ be? • Link all interesting ‘stuff’ to the ‘index’ page (index.html) • You can develop ‘minnie’ main pages (.htm) • Be consistent with backgrounds. menus, colors, etc., on all pages. • Use ‘directories’ for navigation.

  12. Etiquette? • Use ‘Back to Top’ links • Always link back to the index page. • Always give credit to the sites you steal from ;) • Never plagiarize another site component as your own – it could get you into trouble!

  13. Remember always… • To remember your audience – who is looking? • To keep it simple – remember? • To not link to sites you are not familiar with. • To be ready to accept the fact that if you push the limits you may lose your domain & your website.

  14. So, to get started … • Open DreamWeaver on your computer • We may have to set up the program 1st because • It wants to know where you will be filing your ‘stuff’, and • Your ftp information (you need a website host first) is needed.

  15. Then… • Build an ‘index’ page • Will look like ‘index.html’ • The website main page will look like • http://www.sitename.edu/index.html • The main page of a website needs to be identified as an ‘index.html’ page. The host server (which will probably be running LINUX software) will identify and start this page when your website is launched.

  16. Import …. • Graphics (Google - Images) • Animated GIF’s • http://www.gifs.net/gif/ • Backgrounds • http://www.backgroundcity.com/ • Design a Site Banner • http://www.bannerbreak.com/

  17. Or insert… • Movie clips • Sounds • Music • Home videos • Or anything else you can think of

  18. An Example – if it will work…

  19. At last… • Have fun! • Make it cool! • Upgrade your pages often – keep them neat! • Be creative – you can’t lose! • Study other sites – get clues how to make your page the best!

  20. Your Welcome! If you have questions – ask Thea!
