  2. Speed • Variable – A quantity that can change, often with a numerical value. A variable has a name and a value. Examples – speed, depth, time, etc.

  3. Speed • Speed is the relationship between distance and time. • v=d/t

  4. Conversion Factors • You can’t compare values in different units. Must change into the same units. • Practice #1 – Convert 32km/hour to m/s • Practice #2– Convert 595m/s to km/hr • Practice #3– Convert 45mi/hr to m/s • 1 mile = 1.609km

  5. Speed vs. Velocity • Velocity is the same as speed, EXCEPT there is a direction associated with it.

  6. Solving Problems • What is the average speed in km/hr of a car that has traveled 17 meters in 3 seconds? • How far did a car travel in 3 hours that had a constant speed of 50 km/hr? • How long did it take a car with a constant speed of 70 miles/hour to travel 600 miles?

  7. Accuracy and Error • Error is the difference between a measurement and the true value. • Accuracy is how close a measurement is to the true value.

  8. Error • Assume the average is the “true value”. • The error is the difference between the average and the highest and lowest values.

  9. Error Practice Problems • If the width of a machine part should be 4.00cm with an acceptable error of +/- 0.03cm, which of the following lengths is significantly different? A. 4.04cm B. 3.98cm C. 4.29cm Given the same information above, which of the measurements is within the accepted amount of error?
