  1. Unit 4- AOS 1 Health, Human Development, Sustainability and Sustainable Human Development

  2. UNIT 4 HEALTH AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT Outcome 1 Key Knowledge The interrelationship between health, human development and sustainability to produce sustainable human development in a global context Key Skill Analyse in different scenarios the interrelationship between health, human development and sustainability

  3. What do we mean by: Wellbeing is the state of being healthy, happy and contented, usually determined by self assessment Health: The state of physical, social and mental wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. (WHO) Human Development: Human development is an indicator of theoverall wellbeing of a country. It is about creating an environment in which people can develop to their full potential andlead long, creative, healthy and fulfilling lives. It is about expanding people’s choices andenhancing capabilities (what people can be and do), having access to knowledge, health and a decent standard of living andparticipatingin the life of the community anddecisionsaffecting their lives.

  4. What do we mean by: Human rights, labour rights, shelter, education, nutrition Sustainability: Sustainability means meeting today’s needs and planning the country’s growth without creating problems or depleting resources for future generations to meet their own needs As these three components become more aligned and the area of overlap becomes bigger, so too does human wellbeing increase Companies, organisations and governments must be sustainable Clean air, safe drinking water, food

  5. How do we achieve Sustainable Human Development? ULTIMATE GOAL IS: Sustainable Human Development Human Development Sustainability Health + + =

  6. How do we achieve Sustainable Human Development? ULTIMATE GOAL IS: Sustainable Human Development Human Development Health Sustainability + + = Sustainable human development means that not only is the current generation able to achieve full potential and lead long, creative, healthy and fulfilling lives but future generations are likely to have the skills, knowledge and resources to meet their own needs to improve their own standard of living

  7. Points to consider? In order to achieve human development it is vital to have an appropriate level of health Poor health makes development not sustainable Good health is an important component of sustainable human development Sustainable human development is also an important factor for good health Improvement in health status lays the foundation for sustainable human development

  8. How does Poor Health influence Human Development? Poor Health Populations suffering from poor health: Impacts on the ability of individuals to reach their potential and participate in life and therefore contribute to human development May reduce the chance of sustainable human development and support increased opportunities for sustainability

  9. A person suffering from poor health • (EG. HIV/AIDS) : • Difficult to find work • Care for the family • Attend school • Will find human development hard to achieve as they will not able to participate in the community, unable to acquire knowledge, not involved in the decision making process that affect their life. • Not able to develop their full potential, lead productive , fulfilling lives and creative lives. How does Poor Health influence Human Development?

  10. ?Refugee Crisis at Dadaab Camp?? – YouTube • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AsjAaEitZ8

  12. How does Poor Health influence Human Development? The determinants of health that deny sustainable human development must be addressed or eradicated.Examples of determinants : Poverty: Food Insecurity: Conflict: Access to health careIn order for poor health to be addressed strategies are needed to target poor health with the aim of reducing inequalities in health status in developing countries The Millennium Development Goals are an example: Reduce poverty - Goal # 1 Implementing sustainable education programs - Goal # 2 Increase access to health care - Goals # 4; 5; 6; Address climate change - Goal # 7 Gender inequality - Goal # 3

  13. A mother’s improved health status • Regular employment • Income – adequate nutrition and access to health care for family • Physically capable of supporting family within the home • Children more likely to go to school → education, skills, knowledge for future generations →sustainable human development How does Good Health influence Human Development? Will find human development easier to achieve as they will be able to participate in the community, acquire knowledge, be involved in the decision making process that affect their life. Able to develop their full potential, lead productive , fulfilling lives and creative lives (HD).

  14. How does Sustainable Human Development influence health ? The extent of human development can have an impact on the health status of an individual or community In a country that is not experiencing positive human development, the lack of choice and resources will have a negative impact on physical, social and mental health. EG: FEWER CHOICES ABOUT EDUCATION AND HEALTH CARE Physical Health - illness - decreases knowledge about health promotion Refugee camp Direct impact on health Social Health – unable to attend school and less social interaction Mental Health – stress about lack of choices

  15. How Sustainable Human Development influence health USING KNOWLEDGE HAVING A DECENT STANDARD OF LIVING PARTICIPATING IN COMMUNITY AND DECISION MAKING • Understanding and reducing the impact of health determinants • EG. Tobacco smoking • Alcohol consumption Sexual behaviours • Nutritional knowledge▪ Enables people to make decisions about their health status • ▪ Shelter provides security and protection • improves • health status • Safe water and sanitation • decreases the risk of disease and sanitation ▪ Empowers people to make own decisions ▪ Helps to build communities ▪ Builds capabilities and capacities ▪ Increases participation in social activities Component of Sustainable Human Development influencing Health Example 1 Example 2 Example 3

  16. How can Human Development impact on sustainability ? Countries striving for a decent standard of living could cause damage to the environment in terms of deforestation and global warming Other examples????? Reports | Global reports | HDR 2007/2008 | Videos | Human Development Reports (HDR) | United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

  17. UNIT 4 HEALTH AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT Key Skill Analyse in different scenarios the interrelationship between health, human development and sustainability

  18. Applying your knowledge Describe the level of health status of the children depicted in the photo below. Explain how this level of health status would impact negatively on sustainable human development Identify and explain aspects of human development that need to be addressed in this scenario for it to be sustainable.

  19. Applying your knowledge Describe the level of health status of the people depicted in the photo below. Explain how this level of health status would impact positively on human development Identify and explain aspects of sustainable human development that are evident in this scenario.

  20. Climate change Applying your knowledge Explain how the influence of climate change can impact on sustainable human development E

  21. Key SkillAnalyse in different scenarios the interrelationship between health, human development and sustainability In order to address this key skill the following questions form the basis of an analysis of a scenario to draw a conclusion

  22. Key Sill: Analyse in different scenarios the interrelationship between health, human development and sustainability Questions What is the issue(s) and what is the context in which it has risen? What impact is the issue(s) having on the health and human development of population group(s)? Provide statistics if they are included. Outline the strategy (s) for addressing the issue(s).

  23. Key Sill: Analyse in different scenarios the interrelationship between health, human development and sustainability Human development Questions 4. How successful has the strategy(s) been? That is, what impact is the implemented strategy/intervention having on: The health/wellbeing of the population/people The populations ability to lead long, healthy and fulfilling lives The populations ability to develop full potential and lead productive and creative lives People’s choices to live the life they value People’s access to knowledge (education) The populations ability to participate in the community The populations ability to participate in the decisions that affect their lives 5. Are the strategies/interventions proposed sustainable - economically, socially and environmentally. Are they laying the foundations for future generations?
