  1. Modeling and simulation of PCBs using parameterextraction tools C.A. López The effects of high frequency parasitics in PCBs become more important due to use of applications with higher operation frequencies. The parameters extractor tools model the structures taking into account geometrical dimensions and electromagnetic effects and exporting the model to electrical simulators. The tools are used to simulate power distribution systems and select number and placement of decoupling capacitors. Also, routing traces in PCBs in order to minimize parasitics. OBJECTIVES Project sponsored by • To evaluate the difficult of using parameter extractor tools • To identify the accuracy of the tools • To recognize if the tools can be applied to design power distribution systems Some problems can be predicted • Crosstalk • Simultaneous switching noise • Voltage drops MODELING PCB The tools allow to extract • Self and mutual inductances • and resistances • Matrix of capacitances and • admittances RESULTS • Voltages drops in boards are identified • Noise in components are recognized • Coupling between traces and layers are simulated CONCLUSIONS • All the analysis can be done in an easy way because the tools are intuitive. • To export models to electrical simulators requires no effort, the models do not present convergence problems, and are easy to implement them. • Simulation time of parameters extractor tools is shorter than prototyping stages; the behavior of power distribution systems can be known through simulations, hence the fabrication time of the systems can be reduced. • Import PCBs to parameters extractor tools is simple and does no t need long time. • Good agreement between simulations and experimental results.
