  2. Outline • Review progress of specific at risk programs • Overview of ETCD renewal • Declining budget and impact on future of ETCD • Potential financial solutions

  3. General ETCD Philosophy • Build a clinical and translational research educational foundation • Utilized by multiple programs • Partner with existing educational training programs • Provide CCTSI support • Quantitatively and qualitatively

  4. Growth of ETCD:At risk programs are highlighted

  5. Annual CCTSI ETCD NIH Budget:UL1, TL1, KL2, Inst. support $1,888,561 $1,359,605 ($528,956)

  6. Domino effect on other NIH grants • Other grants/programs utilize our programs • LITeS, CO-mentor, KTR, SUMMiT, STaRS • Clinical Sciences, Clinical Research Education • Examples of grants that will be affected • K12s, K23s, K08s, T32s, and SUMMiT programs • Summary statements comment on importance of CCTSI programs • Puts the renewal of these NIH funded programs at significant jeopardy

  7. 1. Clinical Sciences (CLSC) • Currently, over 70% of CLSC alumni hold grant support • 45% is NIH funding • Alumni hold > 250 grants and have published >1,000 manuscripts • High impact journals such as JAMA, Circulation, and Cancer

  8. 2. Clinical Research Educational Program 2013 less upper level courses; 50% participants in 3 beginner courses

  9. 3. LITeS Program More than 100 scientists have participated High levels of satisfaction with development of new skills: • 100% increased connectedness to the University • 100% valued interactions with diverse investigators • 30% developed new collaborations

  10. 3. Growth in skills and knowledge as a result of LITeS participation 2012-13 • They want more • Team projects add substantially to the experience. • They take it back to their labs. • They recommend it to others. • LITeS meets a real and important need.

  11. 3. A few LITeS Quotes • “The mere fact that CU is interested in investing such resources into their faculty makes me feel valued and want to give back.” • “LITeS was an incredible gift to us. I feel so appreciative of the training I received and of the opportunity to meet colleagues from across campus. I was especially pleased to see that our group projects were well received by the CU Leadership. I feel very connected to the advancement of team science on the AMC [Anschutz Medical Campus].” • “Understanding my own interpersonal and leadership styles really has helped me to be a more effective leader. I am much more aware of where my strengths and weaknesses are, which has enabled me to be a better agent of change in my organization.”

  12. 4. SUMMiT Program Collaborative series • Quantitatively and qualitatively enhance summer undergraduate research programs • Hispanic, Native American, and Alaskan Native students • Meet the leaders • Career development seminars • Provide evaluation support • Centralize application process on CCTSI website • The future success and renewal of programs are intertwined with CCTSI

  13. 4. SUMMiT program: Native American Research Educational Focus • Dine College • First Tribal College • Established by an Act of Congress in 1968 • CCTSI Enhancement of their Summer Research Program • Fund two additional summer stipends • Provide mentoring support for students • Integrate students into the CU community

  14. 5. STaRS Program Collaboration with Office of Diversity and Community Engagement Partner with Denver Public Schools Denver East High School CEC Middle College High School Magnet Trade School Working with their Science Program Denver School of Science and Technology

  15. General Overview of ETCD Renewal • Continue current programs • Expand current programs • Create new programs and courses

  16. Renewal: Educational Figure and Themes Funding concerns are primarily located in the junior pipeline and foundation programs

  17. Concerns: Summary Statement and EAC committee • Not enough committed time for directors • Need to develop alternative career pathways • Need more rigorous evaluation component • EAC: Impending decrease in NIH funding is a concern • KL2 and affiliated programs • Clinical Sciences program • EAC: Develop innovative ways to train future investigators • Big data

  18. Funding needed for ETCD component of the CCTSI renewal

  19. New Initiatives: Clinical Sciences • Masters of Science in Health Services Research • School of Public Health • Dual PharmD-MSCS degree program • School of Pharmacy • Dual MD-MSCS degree program • School of Medicine • 5 new courses • Focused on D&I, team science, and academia-industry drug development/medical device, technology transfer

  20. New Initiatives : Clinical Research Education Programs • Basic Training Course for Research Coordinators • Create career ladder with established benchmarks and certification • Intranet resource kit • Intensive weekend course for coordinators from around the State

  21. New Initiatives : SUMMiT and STaRs programs • Develop TL1 Research Methodology Enrichment Track • TL1 scholars will attend the Clinical Research Educational Program (CREP) sessions • Expand The CCTSI-American Indian/Alaska Native Collegiate Partnership to include undergraduate students from the Pine Ridge Reservation-South Dakota.  • Bring students to UC-Denver

  22. New Initiatives : KL2 programs • Enhance the KL2 program by improving synergy with other clinical translational programs • Develop lecture series: George Gopen • Create pre-K grant review program • Enrich and expand our Mentoring and Career Development Programs • Develop Junior Mentor Development Program • Expand KtoR to include all first R grants • Video conference with other institutions

  23. Approach for the Evaluation of our Programs • Plan to partner with evaluation core to not just report of the programs but identify educational questions that can be rigorously studied and result in original research publications

  24. Question for the EAC: Possible solutions? • Secure institutional support • Identify other funding sources • If so what sources? • Decide what programs will be eliminated • Other possibilities
