  1. CLOUDS & PRECIPITATION By Mrs. Wisher WRITE EVERYTHING IN RED

  2. ClOUDS VOCABULARY humidity – the amount of water vapor in the air dew point – the temperature at which condensations begins dew – moisture that forms on the ground fog – clouds that form near or on the ground

  3. WATER CYCLE & CLOUDS • First, water evaporates • Then water in the atmosphere begins to condense to form clouds • Some clouds will eventually precipitate

  4. HOW DO CLOUDS FORM? Clouds form when water vapor in the air becomes liquid water or ice crystals. Water condenses on small particles or dust suspended in the air to form a cloud

  5. 3 TYPES OF CLOUDS Which type is this cloud? Cumulus – “heap” – usually are taller than they are wide Stratus – “layered” – are wider than they are tall Cirrus – wispy feathered clouds

  6. Stratus • Stratus – low lying grey clouds with no precipitation • Nimbostratus – low lying grey clouds with precipitation • Altostratus – higher altitude layered clouds

  7. What cloud is this? Α Ε Β

  8. Cirrus Cirrus clouds are high altitude feathery clouds that represent fair weather cirrostratus – thin sheet like clouds that let the sun or moon shine through cirrocumulus – small cotton ball shaped clouds that looked rippled

  9. What cloud is this? Β Α Ċ

  10. Cumulus • Cumulus – “fluffy” clouds that often have a flat base and rounded top with vertical development – usually a sign of good weather • Cumulonimbus – tall towering clouds with a flat base and anvil shaped top that signals a thunderstorm building • Altocumulus – higher altitude cumulus clouds

  11. What cloud is this? Α Β Ċ

  12. What is this cloud?

  13. Precipitation Precipitation is any form of water that falls from clouds. Droplets must grow heavy enough for rain or snow to fall from the clouds

  14. Types of Precipitation rain – water that is at least above 0°C sleet – rain falls then freezes before it hits the ground freezing rain – rain that falls then freezes after it hits the ground hail – round ice pellets from cumulonimbus clouds snow – water vapor forms snow inside a cloud

  15. Which form of precipitation are these?

  16. Measuring Weather • thermometer • anemometer • rain gauge • barometer • weather vane • measures temperature • measures wind speed • measures rainfall • measures air pressure • measures wind direction

  17. Which one is this? A Β Ć Ε Ď
