  1. October 1, 2013 • Finish up our “Critique” • Movement: Mark, Rodrigo, Jovanni • Unity: Jesus, Eduardo, Carlos • Breadth #5: Intro • Begin collage if time (no glue today) • Homework: Completing/returning any missing assignments B1-B4 (thumbnails, drafts, finished work etc)

  2. Smashed Self Portrait • What you’re learning: • Drawing techniques (graphing for proportion, values, shading, realism) • Composition (how you set up your page) • About Pablo Picasso & Cubism • Creating a sense of discomfort and “unease” with imagery (engage the viewer/artist voice) • Practice not being worried if you don’t look “pretty” if it means creating an emotion within your art.

  3. 1. Take your photos in 2-3 anglesOne will be a “smooshed” view

  4. 2. Cut apart and arrange your pictures in an interesting way. COMPOSITION!!!

  5. 3. Use a grid to graph the photo collage. Draw it square by square. You will NOT see the grid when you are done!!

  6. (Unless you come up with something really different)

  7. Materials: Drawing pencils (Black, white, grey) • Want to use color? Convince me that there’s a reason! • Consider ACCENT COLORS only. Mixed with and shading like pencil. • Paper size will all be the same.

  8. Pablo Picasso1881-1973“art consists of inventing & not copying” • Born in Spain • One of the major founders of “Cubism” • Created more than 22,000 works of art in his life time

  9. Picasso did it all.He could paint like this…

  10. And like this…

  11. Cubism style: • ‘Shattered’ or fragmented objects and shapes. Typically more geometric in shape. Imagine broken glass! 1908-1914

  12. Picasso took Cubist ideas to all different places…

  13. Sculpture & Collage(it’s said that Picasso was one of the first artists to use collage..)

  14. This project is like a modern version of Cubism

  15. Some more inspiration(Notice the similarities to the Multiple View Still Life…)

  16. Unrelated but strange portrait photos:Creates “discomfort” “awkwardness” etc. • Doublefaced: Sebastian Bieniek Creates Unsettling Two-Faced Portraits with Makeup

  17. Now: • Start cutting up your photographs, overlapping things…creating your collage • Tomorrow we will grid our collage and papers

  18. Due Dates • Collage Due 10/2 • Grid done on 10/4 • 1st Submission 11/7 • This sounds like a lot of time but we will not be working on it in class that entire time. Only about 8-9 class periods. The rest is out of class. • 75% or more completed • Range of values • Accuracy (use of grid)
