  1. Mrs. Connors’ 1st Grade Welcome to Open House

Introduction • This is my 21st year teaching in Cobb County. • I have taught all grade levels as well as being a math and literacy coach. • I have my undergraduate degree from KSU, my masters from UWG and my specialist degree in early childhood and leadership from LMU. • This is my 5th year at Vaughan. • I have been married for 19 years and have 2 children. Meaghan is in 10th grade at Harrison and Jackson is a 6th grader at LMMS.

Daily Schedule • 7:15-8:05-Warm up/attendance/announcements • 8:05-9:05-Readers Workshop • 9:05-9:20-Number Talks/Snack • 9:20-10:20-Math Workshop • 10:20-10:40-Content (SS,Science,Health) • 10:40-11:30-Specials • 11:30-11:50-Content cont. • 11:52-12:22-Lunch • 12:25-12:40-Class meeting/read aloud • 12:45-1:00-Social Interaction/Extended PE • 1:00-2:00-Writers Workshop • 2:05-Pack up/prepare for dismissal

  5. Writing Workshop • Narrative Writing • Informational writing • Opinion • Procedural (lab reports)

  6. Reading Workshop • Guided Reading-Small group reading that is differentiated based upon readiness and interests. • Comprehension Strategies- Connecting, Visualizing, Questioning, Determining Importance, Synthesizing, and Inferring • Weekly 5 Literacy Centers/CAFE • Independent Reading Encourage just right reading level; 5 finger rule

  7. Sight Words • Sight words/high frequency words list (know at sight). Purple sheet/keep in folder. • 1st 9 weeks 75 or more=3 • 2nd 9 weeks 100 or more=3 • 3rd 9 weeks 150 or more =3 • 4th 9 weeks 200 or more = 3 • Kindergarten learns 100 and 1st grade 200

  8. Math • Counting to 120 and • Understanding place value • Addition and subtraction • Geometry • Solving word problems to 20 from all unknowns • Measuring length • Graphing • Comparing numbers

  9. Fact Fluency • Adding fluently means that students know their addition facts well enough to say them in a snap. • We will be studying math facts daily • Help at home: create flash cards with your child’s leveled facts on them and practice them nightly.

  10. Science/Social Studies • Science-collecting and analyzing data, weather, light, sound, magnets, plants and animals (basic needs/parts) • Social Studies-Historical figures (Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Lewis and Clark,Sacagawea,Ruby Bridges, Theodore Roosevelt, George Washington Carver) • Continents, oceans, landforms, goods and services, me on the map (where they live)

  11. Classroom Management • Please check daily folder nightly any notes, transportation changes etc. will be in the folder. • Positive Incentives • Camp cash • Classroom trade days • Classroom Compliments • Red Tickets-Monthly Drawing

  12. Agenda/Homework • Homework will be due on Fridays • There is no penalty for not doing homework. • Students will receive camp cash for each day they complete their homework for the week.

  13. Absences • All absences require a written note signed by a parent within 24 hours of returning. • After 3 or more unexcused absences you will be contacted via CC policy. • Our instructional time begins at 7:50. Please make every effort to have your child to school on time.

  14. Transportation • Please send a note on the day your child’s transportation will be changed. • Students are required to be sent home the “usual” way unless I have a written note. • In rare cases, please fax the office or call for emergencies.
