  2. What is Internet • The Internet is a global digital infrastructure that connects millions of computers. • The internet is a worldwide public network of computers on which people can join and use multiple services such a sharing of information .

  3. Tim Berners Lee 8 June 1955 (age 56) • Sir Timothy John "Tim" Berners-Lee, also known as "TimBL", is a British computer scientist,  • The inventor of the World Wide Web. • Berners-Lee is the director of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which oversees the Web's continued development

  4. Internet connection Type

  5. Dial Up connection • Dial-up connections to the Internet require no infrastructure other than the telephone network. • Where telephone access is widely available, dial-up remains useful and it is often the only choice available for rural or remote areas, where broadband installations are not prevalent due to low population density.

  6. Broadband connection • Broadband Internet service truly is the most used form of Internet access because of its high access speeds.

  7. Internet service provider (ISP) • An Internet service provider (ISP) is an organization that provides access to the Internet. • Internet service providers can be either community-owned and non-profit, or privately owned and for-profit.

  8. Service Providers Ranking • Rank 1: BSNL ( 57.84% Market Share ) • Rank 2: MTNL ( 13.81% Market Share ) • Rank 3: BhartiAirtel Ltd. ( 8.07% Market Share ) • Rank 4: Reliance Commn. Infra. Ltd. ( 7.88% Market Share ) • Rank 5: Hathway Cable & Datacom Pvt. Ltd. ( 1.94% Market Share )

  9. What is Network • A Connection of two or more Computers. So that they can share resources. • Connection between two or more Computer, which allows them to share the same Software and information.

  10. Type of network

  11. Local Area Network • A local area network (LAN) is a computer network  that share a common communications in a limited area such as a home, school, computer laboratory, or office building. • LANs are confined to a single building or group of buildings. • Usually, the server has applications and data storage that are shared in common by multiple computer users.,

  12. Wide Area Network • A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a telecommunication network that covers a broad area ( any network that links across metropolitan, regional, or national boundaries).

  13. Metropolitan Area Network • A metropolitan area network (MAN) is a computer network that usually spans a city or a large campus.  • A MAN is optimized for a larger geographical area than a LAN, ranging from several blocks of buildings to entire cities

  14. Protocols • In computing, a protocol is a set of rules which is used by computers to communicate with each other across a network. • A protocol is a convention or standard that controls or enables the connection, communication, and data transfer between computing endpoints.

  15. Search Engines • Search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN and OAL, ask are used for searching the internet for information or pictures. • For example, you may need to find information about surfing the internet safely. • All you need to do is to go to the engine and give a keyword of the topic you are interested in finding information for.

  17. COMMUNICATION • Messenger services provide a real breakthrough in communication today. • Their use has managed to minimize distances and offer the chance to people who have friends and families living far away from them communicate easily and cheap.

  18. Electronic Mails • Electronic mails are another form of communication which nowadays has replaced our traditional hand written letter. • E-mails are letters that can be sent through the internet and can arrive almost instantly and without cost. • E-mails are an essential part of every company and every person who needs to communicate with people that live far away from them.

  19. Email short hand

Web Browser • A web browser can also be defined as an application software or program designed to enable users to access, and view documents and other resources on the Internet. • The first web browser was invented in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee. It was called World Wide Web (no spaces) and was later renamed Nexus. • Mosaic is the web browser credited with popularizing the World Wide Web.

  21. Web Browsers list

  22. Web Pages • A web page or webpage is a document or information resource that is suitable for the World Wide Web and can be accessed through a web browser and displayed on a monitor or mobile device. • A web page, as an information set, can contain numerous types of information, which is able to be seen, heard or interact by the end user.

  23. Static web page • A static web page (sometimes called a flat page) is a web page that is delivered to the user exactly as stored • Static web page displays the same information for all users,

  24. Dynamic Web pages • Dynamic web pages are web sites that are generated at the time of access by a user or change as a result of interaction with the user.

  25. What is website? • A website, also written as Web site, web site, or simply site, is a set of related web pages containing content (media), including text, video, music, audio, images, etc. • websites include many business sites, parts of news websites, academic journal websites, gaming websites, file-sharing websites, message boards, web-based email, social networking websites, websites providing real-time stock market data, and websites providing various other services.

  26. Server • A server is a computer program running to serve the requests of other programs,. • In most common use, server is a physical computer dedicated to running one or more such services (as a host),to serve the needs of users of the other computers on the network.

  27. What is protocol? • In computing, a protocol is a set of rules which is used by computers to communicate with each other across a network. • A protocol is a convention or standard that controls or enables the connection, communication, and data transfer between computing endpoints

  28. File Transfer protocol • File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a standard Network protocol used to copy a file from one host to another over a network, such as the Internet. • FTP is built separate control and data connections between the client and server.

  29. Simple mail transfer protocol • Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is a protocol used to send and receive email. • The Internet standard protocol for transferring electronic mail messages from one computer to another.

  30. Post office Protocol • Post Office Protocol version 3) POP3 is a commonly implemented method of delivering email from the mail server to the client machine.

  31. Internet Message Access Protocol • (Internet Message Access Protocol) IMAP is gradually replacing POP as the main protocol used by email clients in communicating with email servers. • Using IMAP an email client program can not only retrieve email but can also manipulate message stored on the server, without having to actually retrieve the messages. • So messages can be deleted, have their status changed, multiple mail boxes can be managed etc.

  33. Interesting Fact The most amazing aspect of Internet is about its birth, its evolution and its history.•    In 1960 the US Defense created the Internet.•    The term World Wide Web was coined by Tim Berners-Lee in the year 1990.•    The first computer hard drive was capable of storing only 5 MB data.•    A recent survey conducted by Google reveals that the average view time for a single webpage is about 41 seconds.Fascinating Facts•    Radio took 38 years to have a million users, where as Television reached the same figure in 13 years. But the Internet achieved this staggering number in only 5 years time.•    Cyber crime has become more prevalent nowadays and each crime is committed in every 10 seconds.•    About 3 Million TB of data is created and stored each year and the number is rising.•    Only 30% of Internet users are women.

  34. Interesting Facts • Facts for ChildrenA child nowadays seems to know more about computers than their parents. However, there are certain remarkable facts that they need to know about computers and Internet.•    Douglas Engelbart created the first mouse in the year 1968.•    The first web browser was named Mosaic.•    We can access more than a billion websites today through Internet.•    While using the Internet we blink 10 times a minute where we normally blink 20 times in the same time.
