  4. What Did Japan Want? • Japan thought that attacking the US would provide an easy win, and a territory with abundant land and resources to rule once they were victorious. • Their main goals were to disable American aircraft carriers and ships • They wanted to extend their empire like Germany

  5. Phases of Attack • (7:55 am to 8:25am)Torpedo planes and dive bomb attacks • No attacks until 8:40 am • (8:40 -9:15 am)Horizontal bomber attacks • (8:15-9:45) Dive bomber attacks • (9:45 am) Warning of attacks and end of raid

  6. JAPAN • > 5 Midget Submarines • 81 Fighter Planes • 135 Dive Bombers • 104 Horizontal Bombers • 40 Torpedo Planes

  7. US 993 Army/Navy Anti-aircraft guns  - 108 Fighter Planes (59 not available for flight)  - 35 Army Bombers (27 not available for flight)

  8. CASUALTIES JAPAN • less than 100 men • 29 planes • 5 midget submarines US • 2,335 servicemen killed • 68 civilians killed • 1,178 wounded • 188 planes • 18 ships (8 battleships, 3 light cruisers, 3 destroyers, 4 other vessels) • USS Arizona Burning: 1,100+ Servicemen died on the ship

EFFECTS & OUTCOMES • Japan dealt a seemingly crippling blow to the US Pacific Fleet • Japan began their quest for a Pacific empire • US was forced to join WWII (“The Sleeping Giant was awakened”) • US and Great Britain declare war on Japan (Dec. 8, 1941) • Germany and Italy declare war on the US (Dec. 11, 1941)
