  2. Background on ICOD ICOD was founded in February 2008. Focus: Beginning a process of sustainable social and economic growth for the Lyantonde District. Undoing the effects of the HIV/AIDS virus in the area

  3. Background on ICOD ICOD is a organization of 55 members and a few foreign partners: 8 founding individuals - staff Residents of Lyantonde 5 foreign volunteer partners Child from Lyantonde District http://www.projectfocus.org/media/video.php

Background on ICOD Sources of Funding: Members donations Training course run by staff Lack of solid sources of funds has limited ICOD from implementing other projects that would help change the lives of the vulnerable people.   5. Lyantonde Statistics Total Population: 66,039 Child Population: 36,050 Orphan Population: 5,571 HIV Prevalence: Lyantonde Average: 17.8% National Average: 6.5% Two of the orphans supported by ICOD

  6. Lyantonde Statistics Poverty Level: Rural areas: 82.8% Pre-urban areas: 73% Population without access to clean water: 71.2% Lyantonde resident collects water, as visiting Korean Engineer (hosted by ICOD) looks on during water source assessment for implementation of a potential purification system

  7. Challenges to Development Inability to fund schooling Inadequate teaching staff Poor health of residents and inadequate health services Inability for individuals to feed their families Water shortages These factors have contributed to a high drop out rate in elementary schools. ICOD Staff member and visiting foreign partner

Projects Undertaken to Date To date, ICOD has been able to: Conduct an enumeration and needs assessment survey Support orphans by providing scholastic materials Distribute food and farming supplies Host Korean Engineers to assess water sources and possible purification systems Students and teachers at school in Lyantonde District www.trustforafricasorphans.org.uk

Goals for Sustainable Development Continued scholastic support to orphans HIV/AIDS sensitization and awareness programs Further food and seed distribution Health outreach for the poor Agricultural training and support Installation of water purification systems ICOD Staff members during engineering project for school in Lyantonde

SWOT Analysis(Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) Strengths: Potential to significantly change the socio-economic state of Lyantonde through partnership with district Relationship with district built on trust and accountability Experienced, multi-skilled, and committed staff A five year plan based on a staff survey to determine relevant and sustainable projects One of the many orphans supported by ICOD

  11. SWOT Analysis(Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) Weaknesses: Current primary sources of income which are unreliable and insufficient Limited means of transportation needed to facilitate field operations. ICOD Staff members, child, and foreign visitor on farm land in Lyantonde

Organization’s Emphasis The organization’s vision is “creating an empowered community, free from disease and suffering, living in pleasant conditions where human rights are observed” - ICOD Constitution and Human Rights Framework “ … this is a revolution that we are into now … [changing lives] … we should always sacrifice every bit that we have, help as much as we can, ensure sustainable and responsible service provision to our beneficiaries and always uphold volunteerism, community participation, transparency and accountability in all our community projects.” - Michael Mugerwa Ahabwe, Country Program Coordinator - ICOD Uganda, March 17, 2008 General assembly speech

  14. Sources of Statistics • Population statistics are from The 2002 Uganda Population and Housing Census • HIV/AIDS prevalence rate statistics are from Lyantonde Hospital records. Lyantonde hospital is ICOD’s close partner in HIV/AIDS interventions programs • Poverty level statistics are from the District Three Years Rolled Development Plan. • ICOD also gets independent statistics from independent surveys done by staff.
