  3. School and military career A. French military academy at age 14 1. in school for 5 years B. After school he was promoted to 2nd lieutenant. C. Posted on French mainland 1. stationed for 8 years D. French revolution destroyed republic’s officer class. 1. napoleon was promoted to an officer E. 1793 Napoleon was the hero of Toulon 1. arrested for treason

  4. Failures A. Couldn’t help everyone who needed it. B. Forces sent to pacify Spain failed 1. British forces gained toe hold in Portugal. C. Napoleon’s empire showed decline by 1811.

  5. Napoleonic Code A. eighteenth century enlightenment ideas spread. 1. Ancien regime began to unravel 2. Ius commune was under attack B. Ius Commune 1. Fashioned by jurists and judges 2. Not really for popular will 3. Often class specific 4. Different rules for different social classes

  6. Napoleonic Code C. Codification 1. Undertaken in Prussia, Italy, and Austria 2. Sought to replace Ius commune 3. Code would stand alone as the source of substantive private law.

  7. Napoleon’s death A. In 1815 Napoleon was finally defeated in one of histories greatest battle’s, the battle of waterloo. B. It took 6 years from his wound on waterloo’s battle but he finally died at age 51. C. There are many thoughts on how he died but the most popular are poisoning and his wound from the battle from waterloo.
