Elaine • “The Lady of Shalott” was based on the story of Elaine the Fair of Astolat in Sir Thomas Malory’s Morte D’arthur (1469-70). • Elaine dies of grief because she is in love with Sir Lancelot, but Sir Lancelot loves Queen Guinevere, the wife of King Arthur. • Tennyson developed this story more in Idylls of the King.
