  1. Example for How to Conduct a Pair-Share: Getting to know each other

  2. Pair-Share Activity • Give learners blank 3x5 cards.

  3. Ask learners to find a partner (this is the pair) and using the questions on the next slide interview the other for 2 minutes each.

  4. Let them know they should be ready to briefly introduce each other when they hear (see) the signal. They will have 30 seconds each to do this.

  5. Give them a signal to listen for at the end of the two minutes such as a dog barking, a whistle, or a thumbs up.

  6. INTERVIEW QUESTIONS • What’s your name, major and level? • What do you do for fun? • What experience have you had with photo voltaic systems (or whatever your content is)? • Why are you takingthis class? What’s your goal?

  7. Give the signal a chance to help learners stop their interviewing. (It’s important not to talk during this step, just let them stop talking and turn their attention to you. This helps establish respectful ground rules and gives a common example you can talk about later.)

  8. Explain that you will use an audible 30 second timer for every introduction and commence positive rapport. Why might it be helpful to time the responses in this way?

  9. Setting all-in, time-based expectations that are reasonable, uniform, user friendly and fun helps establish: • equality and respect for every learner • a standard that lets every learner know they are expected to have a voice in the classroom, • an expectation that their time is important and you will not allow it to be wasted, • focus on the task at hand • energetic flow in the classroom
