  7. OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS Cough medicine is the most commonly abused OTC medication. These products contain a common ingredient called “Dextromethorphan” or “DXM”. • SHORT TERM EFFECTS • Confusion • Dizziness • Blurred vision • Slurred speech • Loss of muscle control • Abdominal pains • Fever and sweating • Nausea and vomiting • Loss of consciousness • LONG TERM EFFECTS • Brain damage • Coma • Cerebral hemorrhages • Seizures • Stroke • Death

  12. MARIJUANA • The marijuana plant contains THC, a chemical that is • psycho-active and changes the way people think and behave. In addition, THC affects the nerve cells in the part of the brain where memories are developed. • Short-term Effects: • * Shortened attention span* • Loss of short-term memory • Increased heart rate • *Decreased motivation and concentration* • *Distortion of perception* • * Drowsiness* • Dilated pupils • * Impaired reaction time* • *Decreased coordination/balance* • Use of Marijuana can lead to • Apathy and Lack of motivation to pursue worthwhile goals

  13. Marijuana Use and Driving -Thinking and reflexes are slowed -Ability to track (stay in lane) through curves, to brake quickly, and to maintain speed and proper distance is affected -These skills may be impaired up to 4-6 hours even after the “high” is gone

Risk Factors • Age of first use 5 to 15 Rule • Pre-adolescents-it can take 5 to 15 weeks to become addicted • Adolescents-it can take 5 to 15 months to become addicted • Young Adult and older-it can take 5 to 15 years to become addicted • Family History • On one side of the family- 5x greater risk • Both sides of the family- 8x greater risk • Blackouts • Substance induced amnesia, person cannot remember parts or all of previous days events • Increased tolerance • Need more of a substance in order to get the same high • Negative Consequences • School, Legal, and Family

  17. ALTERNATIVES TO DRUGS! Note: Most teens don’t use drugs. • Join a team, club or organization • Find a job • Volunteer in the community • Exercise • Call a friend • Listen to music • Challenge the perception that drug use is normal among teenagers …what can you do besides doing drugs? The Sky’s the Limit!

HOW TO HELP A FRIEND-RECONGIZING THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF ADDICTION • Recognize the physical symptoms, such as: • Loss of appetite • Red, watery eyes • Runny nose • Hacking cough • Needle marks on arms or legs • Tremors or shaking hands, feet or head • Recognize the behavioral symptoms, such as: • Change in attitude, personality • Change in friends • Change in activities • Lack of motivation • Low self-esteem • Moodiness, irritability • Possession of drugs/alcohol and/or paraphernalia • Offer to help your friend talk to his/her parents, teacher, school counselor, or social worker
