The purpose of this study is to review facts about Greek Mythological Gods, Goddesses, and Creatures, comprehending characters from popular myths by reading and seeing images, both real and adapted from Disney’s Hercules , with a quiz at the end, getting at least 12 out of 15 questions correct to pass.

  5. Before we begin, let’s recall a little background information… • Where do the Gods and Goddesses live? • Mount Olympus: high up in the clouds, it is the home to many Gods and Goddesses. • The Underworld: where evil and lost souls lurk.

  6. Background information continued… • What is a God or Goddess? • Gods and Goddesses are known to have special powers. They each hold the key to how the world stays intact. They are said to be immortal, which means they can never die. • What is a mythological story? • Mythological stories were created thousands of years ago by the Greeks to explain the outcomes of the world. Just like fairy tales told today, Greek Mythologies have been passed down, their stories still taught and learned about today.

  10. Hades • Ruler of the Underworld • Seen as Evil • Collector of lost souls • Enemy of Zeus

  11. Hercules • Handsome and heroic • Super human strength • Known for conquering all enemies • Half mortal (human) from birth • One of the most popular or well known characters

  12. Apollo • God of the Sun • Rode in a chariot, pulling the sun across the sky every morning

  13. Hermes • Messenger to all the Gods and Goddesses • Flew with winged hat and winged sandals • Known for carrying his staff with him everywhere

  14. Poseidon • God of the Sea • Carries a 3 pronged trident • Designed all sea creatures • Force causing all earthquakes

  17. Hera • Wife of Zeus • Very powerful woman • Seen as woman leader • Symbol is a peacock

  18. Medusa • Known as being evil with powers • Head with hair full of snakes • Her gaze will turn you to stone • Eventually beheaded

  19. Aphrodite • Goddess of love and beauty • Seen as most beautiful Goddess • Perfect, gorgeous, eternal beauty • Potent sexual attractiveness

  20. The Fates • 3 Goddesses who controlled the human life span • Determined when and if humans died • Names: Clotho, spun web of life, Lachesis, measured length, and Atropos, cut string of life

  21. Athena • Powerful woman warrior • Also a peacemaker • Known for her shield and helmet, along with an owl

  22. Echo • A mountain nymph (young, sexually desirable) • Distracted Hera, allowing Zeus to cause trouble • Hera took away Echo’s ability to talk • All she could repeat are the last words of others • Withered away until only her voice remained • Where term “echo” comes from today

  26. Cyclops • Creature(s) with one eye in the middle of its forehead • Extremely large, robust, and seen as evil creature

  27. Sphinx • Creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human • Also has wings for flying

  28. Centaur • Creature with the body of a horse and the torso of a man • Physically strong creature • Can be ridden like a horse for transportation

  29. Minotaur • Creature with the body of a man and the head of a bull • Extremely monstrous • Kills and eats humans

  30. Lernaean Hydra • Giant water serpent • Has 9 heads • For each head cut off, 2 more grow back • Killed by Hercules
