  1. Subcommittee on Cultural and Demographic Data’sAddress Data Content Standard Leslie Godwin presented to the Coordination Group forthe Standards Working Group February 6, 2001 Consideration for public review

  2. The Essence • An FGDC-endorsed standard that complements, not replaces, existing address standards. • The purpose is to facilitate the successful sharing of addresses. Sharing requires two types of information -- Content information and Format information. This standard provides a method of documenting the CONTENT of address information by • Providing content documentation requirements. • Standardizing some commonly used discrete units of address information. • Standardizing terms and their definitions to alleviate inconsistencies and simplify the documentation process. • Acknowledges the importance of mailing addresses and provides a vehicle for crosswalking an address to US Postal Service address standards.

  3. A Disclaimer * • The standard • does not require that addresses be shared and does not provide guidelines for determining if they can be shared. • Does not standardize Format information (that second bit of information needed to share addresses). • Does not apply to electronic addresses. * (what it doesn’t do)

  4. Perceived Benefits • Encourages the exchange of address information. • Ensures that those desiring to exchange address information ‘speak a common language’ and can exchange information with a minimum of effort. • Complements, but does not replace, existing address standards. • Keeps it simple.

  5. Development Process • Step 1 - SCDD submitted a standards proposal to the SWG in 1995. • Steps 2 – 5 of the FGDC Standards Process are completed by the SCDD between 1995 and 2000 • includes input and review by member agencies and presentations soliciting input at conferences. • Step 6 – SWG recommends approval for public review at their December 2000 meeting. • The SWG is requesting Coordination Group approval for public review at this time.

  6. In Support of Public Review • The SCDD will ensure that the approximately 50 persons who have expressed interest in the Standard are notified of the public review. • The SCDD has assured the SWG it will respond to the 3 sets of comments submitted to the SWG during its approval process at the completion of public review. • The SCDD will respond to the 1 set of comments submitted to the Coordination Group at the completion of public review.
