  2. The Mongols • Lived in Mongolia • Raised cattle, goats, sheep, and horses • Made up of tribes

  3. The Mongol Empire • Was the biggest land empire in history • Included many countries and territories • Known for horseback riding ability • Also known for ability to wage war

  4. Genghis Khan • In 1206, a meeting of Mongol leaders took place somewhere in the Gobi during which a Mongol named Temujin was named Genghis Khan • Genghis Khan began to unify and organize the scattered Mongol tribes into a fighting force

  5. Mongols Invade China • Soon the Mongols were strong enough to attack major civilizations • In 1211, Mongol forces turned east and invaded China • By 1214, all of Northern China had been taken

  6. People Began to Fear Mongols • Mongols soon became known for their fierce ways • Many surrendered without fighting

  7. Mongols Moved West • The Mongols then moved west • Conquered parts of Eastern and Central Europe • Also conquered a lot of Southwest Asia • In 1258, the Muslim city of Baghdad fell to the Mongols

  8. Mongols go to Egypt • Muslims went through Syria and Palestine to Egypt • Finally stopped by Muslim rulers of Egypt in 1260

  9. Genghis Khan

  10. Genghis Khan (1162?-1227) • Political military genius • Promoted trade between China and Europe • Ruthless warrior who loved causing death and destruction • He died after falling from a horse

  11. How did he affect his empire? • Promoted literacy among his people • Established the first Mongol Code of laws • Created the largest land empire in history

  12. Personal Life • Intelligent man with superior organizational skills and abilities • Kept ferrets as pets • He had little interest in culture • He grew in his father’s camp along the Onon River • He was named Temujin by his father

  14. Kublai Khan became Mongol leader in 1260 Wanted to then rule China Mongols later captured Southern China Kublai then started the Yuan dynasty Kublai Khan

  15. Trade and Wealth • China reached it’s highest wealth and power under the Mongols rule • Wealth brought many foreign travelers • Prospered from trade with other areas • Shipped tea, silk, and porcelain • Traded for silver, spices, carpets, and cotton

  16. Most famous European traveler to reach China Was sent on journeys for 16 years Kublai Khan was intrigued by Marco’s stories Marco Polo
