The Background: King Saul • The People Want a Powerful King • God Gives Them What They Want • Even though it would cost them dearly… • They wanted POWER / PRESTIGE / SECURITY But the people refused to listen to Samuel’s warning. “Even so, we still want a king,” they said. “We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will judge us and lead us into battle.” 1 Samuel 8:19-20

They don’t want me to be their king any longer. 1 Samuel 8:7

The Background: King Saul • The People Want a Powerful King • God Gives Them What They Want • Even though it would cost them dearly… • They wanted POWER / PRESTIGE / SECURITY • God’s leadership was rejected… • God gave them a powerful man… Saul was the most handsome man in Israel—head and shoulders taller than anyone else in the land. 1 Samuel 9:2

The Background: King Saul • The People Want a Powerful King • God Gives Them What They Want • Saul Initially Seems Humble, a Godly Man Saul replied, “But I’m only from the tribe of Benjamin, the smallest tribe in Israel, and my family is the least important of all the families of that tribe! Why are you talking like this to me?” 1 Samuel 9:21 Then the people exclaimed to Samuel, “Now where are those men who said, ‘Why should Saul rule over us?’ Bring them here, and we will kill them!” But Saul replied, “No one will be executed today, for today the Lord has rescued Israel!” 1 Samuel 11:12-13

When Saul and his servant arrived at Gibeah, they saw a group of prophets coming toward them. Then the Spirit of God came powerfully upon Saul, and he, too, began to prophesy. 1 Samuel 10:10

The Background: King Saul • The People Want a Powerful King • God Gives Them What They Want • Saul Initially Seems Humble, a Godly Man • He even tastes the power of God! • But he was actually weak & unwilling… LATER: …they asked the Lord, “Where is he?” And the Lord replied, “He is hiding among the baggage.” So they found him and brought him out, and he stood head and shoulders above anyone else. 1 Samuel 10:22-23 “Where have you been?” Saul’s uncle asked him and his servant. “We were looking for the donkeys,” Saul replied, “but we couldn’t find them. So we went to Samuel to ask him where they were.” “Oh? And what did he say?” his uncle asked. “He told us that the donkeys had already been found,” Saul replied. But Saul didn’t tell his uncle what Samuel said about the kingdom. 1 Samuel 10:14-16

The Background: King Saul • The People Want a Powerful King • God Gives Them What They Want • Saul Initially Seems Humble, a Godly Man • The Heart of Self-Will Some of them crossed the Jordan River and escaped into the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul’s Disobedience and Samuel’s Rebuke Meanwhile, Saul stayed at Gilgal, and his men were trembling with fear. Saul waited there seven days for Samuel, as Samuel had instructed him earlier, but Samuel still didn’t come. Saul realized that his troops were rapidly slipping away. So he demanded, “Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings!” And Saul sacrificed the burnt offering himself. 1 Samuel 13:7-11 “How foolish!” Samuel exclaimed. “You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you. Had you kept it, the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom must end, for the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart. The Lord has already appointed him to be the leader of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.” 1 Samuel 13:13-14

Ahimelech trembled when he saw him. “Why are you alone?” he asked. “Why is no one with you?” 1 Samuel 21:1-4 (NLT)
