Religion in Sweden • Major religion: Christianity – Lutheran • About Lutheranism: • A subset of Christianity created and inspired by Martin Luther and his actions during the Protestant reformation. The basic beliefs are much the same as other Christian factions. Jesus Christ is considered the son of God who sacrificed himself for the sins of humanity. The Lutheran church believes in keeping the sacraments and other rituals alive from the Catholic/Protestant schism that many other Protestant beliefs dropped. It also believes in ascension through true faith, not just love, which reflects the Protestant anger in the Catholic church’s taking of offerings to ‘forgive’ those of their sins – a main cause of the Protestant Reformation.

  8. A Swedish Holiday • Holiday: Epiphany • When Celebrated: January 6th • Origins: The holiday is celebrated by many Eastern European nations who have roots in older Christianity. It originated as a celebration of the incarnation of Jesus Christ as the son of God (his birth, the receiving of the gifts of the Magi, and his baptism.) • Celebration: Now, the people of Sweden mainly celebrate Epiphany in church. It is a national holiday, which means that workers do get the day off to celebrate it. It is considered an extension holiday to the overall experience of Christmas, which is made up of several small holidays beginning with St. Lucia’s Day.

Swedish Recipe: Pannkakor (Swedish Pancakes) • Ingredients: • 2 eggs • 1 ¼ cups of flour • 2 – 2 ½ cups of milk • 1 teaspoon of salt • butter (frying only) • Directions: • 1 Mix the eggs, flour and salt together in a mixing bowl • 2 Add the milk a little at a time, beating the batter until it is smooth and thin • 3 Heat the skillet, add a little butter and fry the pancakes (make sure to fry them on both sides) • 4 Roll or stack pancakes on a plate • 5 Serve hot (whip cream or jam optional)

Swedish Recipe: Three Hole Cake • Ingredients: • Cake - 3 cups of flour, 2 cups of sugar, 2 teaspoons of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of salt, 6 tablespoons of baking cocoa, ¾ cup of oil, 2 cups of cold water, 2 tablespoons of white vinegar, 1 tablespoon of vanilla • Glaze - ½ cup of powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons of baking cocoa, ½ teaspoons of decaf, instant coffee, 1 or 1 ½ tablespoons of milk, ¼ teaspoons of almond extract • Directions: • 1 Mix dry ingredients together in large bowl. • 3 Mix wet ingredients together in separate bowl. • 4 Mix the wet ingredients in with the dry a bit at a time, stirring as you do so • 5 Pour batter into a well-greased bundt cake pan bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes (note that the cake is sticky and the pan greasing is vital) • Instructions for Glaze:. • 1 Mix dry ingredients together in bowl. • 2 Dissolve coffee into 1 tablespoon of milk; add extract. • 3 Whisk the coffee liquid into the dry ingredients; do so until it is all blended, and add another ½ cup of milk if necessary • 4 Use the glaze immediately over the cake; it hardens quickly

It has brilliant and unique architecture and also is home to an archipelago of 24,000 islands. • Activities in Stockholm: • In Stockholm, tourists can find trendy places to shop, explore the Vasa Museum, and explore historical areas like the Drottningholm Palace and Court Theater.
