  3. What is a Standard Drink? Millilitres X Alcohol % X The specific gravity of ethyl alcohol is 0.789 = Standard Drink

  4. Average Drink 0.375L X 4.9% X 0.789 = 1.449 (Av: 1.5)

  5. Wine 1L (4 Glasses) X 11% X 0.789 = 8.68 Standard Drinks

  6. Effects on the Body • After the first drink, the alcohol travels to the small intestine, where 90% of the alcohol passes into the blood stream. • When alcohol reaches the brain it almost immediately slows down our thinking, reasoning and movement. It also affects the part of the brain that controls vomiting. • If the blood alcohol concentration reaches a high enough level, a person may loose consciousness. • Alcohol effects the eyesight, making everyone seem hotter! (Not medically proven)

  7. I'll be fine, Once I have a coffee! • The alcohol in our bloodstream can only be removed by the liver. • It takes the liver about one hour to breakdown and clear one standard drink. • Despite attempts to sober up with cold showers, walking, black coffee, fresh air or vomiting, wishing won’t make it go any quicker. Back to our examples…. 12 Drinks or 2 liters of wine in one night would take your body 18 hours to metabolize. Therefore you start your party at 7pm Friday night, you should be sober by…. 1pm Saturday!

  8. When Have I Had Enough? 72% of Girls (14-17) Drink at Dangerous Levels 78% of Boys (14-17) Drink at Dangerous Levels

  9. Effects on the Brain

  10. Alcohol and Inhibitions Drinking lowers inhibitions and increases the chances that a person will do something that they will regret when they are sober. When intoxicated statistics tell us that: 20% of males and 13% of females aged 14-18 say alcohol was a key component in losing their virginity 40% of sexually active 13 year olds were "drunk or stoned" when losing their virginity

  11. Drinking Dangers • Excessive Drinking Leads To…. • Increased risk-taking behaviour (Lets give it a go for a laugh) • Failure to consider consequences (What could go wrong?) • Forgetting Safe Sex practices (It’s unlikely you have a disease) Young People having sex • When drinking – twice as likely to be unprotected • When drunk – three times as likely to be unprotected 35% of teenage pregnancies in Australia are conceived due to alcohol intoxication A survey of High School students found that 18% of girls and 39% of boys say.. “It is acceptable for a boy to force sex on a girl if she is drunk or stoned!” WRONG!

  12. Don’t get Drunk and Stupid! If you are between 15-19 you have a 31% chance of contracting these STI’s.

  13. Sexual Assault • Rape is committed by attackers of all ages, but the most common age group is between 17-25. • 80-90% of women raped thought they could trust their attacker. • 90% of rape victims aged between 14-17, claim they had been drinking with their attacker.

  14. Drink Spiking How to avoid drink spiking • Don’t accept drinks from strangers • Don’t leave drinks unattended. • If someone offers you a drink, watch them pour it. • Don’t drink something you did not open, or see opened. • If you’re unsure about your drink, leave it. • If you feel dizzy or sick, ask someone you trust to take you to a safe place. • Keep an eye on your friends. If someone collapses and is unconscious, call an ambulance immediately—but do not leave them alone. • Drinks that can be spiked include: • Alcoholic drinks • Soft drinks • Coffee / tea • Water

  15. What is Binge Drinking? Binge Drinking is drinking heavily over a short period of time, or drinking continuously over a number of days or weeks.  It is also commonly known as 'getting smashed', or 'drinking to get drunk'. Long-term effects of Binge Drinking • Becoming physically and psychologically dependent on alcohol. • Significant damage to the brain and liver. • Risk of cancer of the mouth, throat or esophagus • Increased risk of nerve disorders, heart problems, and sexual problems (especially male impotency). • Risk of emotional problems, such as depression, problems at school, work and with relationships.

  16. More Alcohol Consequences

  17. The Ultimate Price For A Drink 90% of All Deaths for Adolescents is Alcohol Related

  18. Youth dead after teen movie drinking stunt A young man has died of alcohol poisoning after taking part in a drinking competition inspired by a teen movie. David Reid, consumed large amounts of vodka, gin and bourbon in just 45 minutes with a mate during a drink-off known as "last man standing". The pair had earlier been drinking margaritas and beer, recreating a scene from hit film American Pie 5: the Naked Mile in which two young men drink until one drops. Reid was carried to bed following the session and was found dead just hours later.

  19. Monday-itus! • What does everyone talk about on Mondays? • Ever avoid school because you were ashamed of your weekend behaviour? • Ask yourself… If there were no drunken weekend idiots to talk about, how much gossip would you cut out? • Ever been picked on/bullied/had a fight with a friend because of something you did while you were drunk?

  20. Party Safely • Do not mix alcohol and other drugs. • Eat food prior to and while drinking alcohol • No topping up drinks, this way you know many you have had • Know your limits - what may be OK for others may not be OK for you • Between alcoholic drinks have a non alcoholic drink • Do not drink and drive or operate heavy machinery • Stay with people you know well and trust • Don't drink and go swimming • Stay busy - don't just sit and drink • Be assertive - don't be pressured into drinking more than you want or intend to • Don’t get into a car with a driver who has been drinking, even if they claim to be capable of driving.
