  2. at Hot Topic: Curbing Unlicensed & Unpermitted Work! Protect yourself and others! The HBA is currently involved in promoting the local efforts of our Remodelers Council and Manatee and Sarasota County Building Departments, who’ve partnered with FHBA, BOAF and CLOAF at the state level to help curb the unlicensed and unpermitted work currently going on in our community. The work by these unlicensed contractors is truly a LIFE & SAFTEY issue that leaves the home owner liable for all the costs -- including fines, multiple permit fees, and in some cases loss of reimbursement of insurance claims -- when submitted for damages. Everyone can help by reporting any activity that you suspect is being done by unlicensed contractors or unpermitted workers. Report suspicious activity: Sarasota County: 941-861-5000 Manatee County: 941-742-5800 DPBR in Tallahassee: 1-866-532-1440 Incoming Board President Mike Rego of John Cannon Homes is sworn in. Outgoing President Michael Kramer presents Dave Wick of Medallion Homes with the President’s Eagle Award 2011. Who is in your circle of influence? Who are the people that you are doing business with on a regular basis? These are the people we want you to talk to about membership. Need help recruiting? 3. at Update: Homes for Our Troops On December 10th, the HBA Manatee-Sarasota participated in presenting US Army SSG Juan Roldan and his family keys to their new home in Parrish and a check for $4,000 for the purchase of new furniture. Roldan, who suffered life-threatening injuries in Iraq and lost both of his legs in an EFP explosion, was the recipient of a new home courtesy of Homes for Our Troops, a non-profit organization that provides specially-adapted homes to severely wounded veterans. Last year, the HBA partnered with the charity and several HBA members involved in constructing the home to raise additional money for furnishings, which Roldan was in real need of. Proceeds from the 11th Annual “Sarasota Slam” fishing tournament in August, along with a $500 donation from DeSears Appliance and Furniture store in Sarasota, were presented to Roldan and his family during the key For more information visit: www.homesforourtroops.org ceremony in the form of a $4,000 check to Homes for Our Troops. The money has since been placed in an account at DeSears, which has agreed to help stretch the donation by providing Roldan with additional discounts at their store. Additionally, John Saputo of Gold Coast Eagle Distributing has offered to help purchase one piece of furniture. Community involvement grows in response to the HBA’s donation! The HBA’s generosity seems to have inspired other local organizations to get involved in raising money for Homes for Our Troops as well. On February 23rd, the Faith Lutheran Church of Parrish will hold a rummage sale to benefit the organization and the 4-H Club of Parrish has an event of their own in the works. More details about both events will be provided in next month’s newsletter and at www.hbamanatee-sarasota.org.
