How would you treat a person who is suspected from suffering from electrocution. There are 7 steps. • Have the casualty stop what they are doing and rest • • DRABCD • • Call 000 for an ambulance—do not drive the casualty to • hospital yourself in case they go into cardiac arrest on the way • • If the patient is conscious, place them in a sitting position • with the head and shoulders upright and help them to take any • angina medication. They can also be given one aspirin tablet in • water to thin the blood • • If the patient is unconscious, place them in the recovery position • and monitor signs of life • • Loosen any tight clothing • • Reassure the patient and rug them up

  6. 4. Whatcommon injuries and can be caused by an array of substances and external sources such as chemicals, friction, electricity, radiation, water, steam, and extreme hot and cold temperatures? How would you treat it? BURNS -DRABCD Instruct the person to stop, cover, drop and roll if there are flames present -Remove the person from the source of the burn -Immediately cool the burn under running water for at least 20 minutes -If possible, remove jewellery or other constrictive items from the burn area -Cover the burnt area with a non-stick dressing or plastic wrap -Reassure the patient and monitor for shock

  7. 5. How would you treat a suspected Nasal injury? -DRABCD - Tell the patient to breathe through their mouth and to try not to sniff or blow their nose - Sit them up with head tilted slightly forward- Pinch the soft part of the patient’s nose together between the fingers and hold for 10 minutes (do not do this for a broken nose) -Apply ice packs to the neck and forehead -Seek medical assistance for a broken nose, or if bleeding from the nose does not stop

  8. 6. If you hear a sudden cry• The person may fall to the ground and lie rigid for a few seconds• Jerky, spasmodic muscular movements• Frothing at the mouth• Loss of control of bladder or bowel. What condition may they be suffering?? • Epilepsy

  9. 7. Your friend has just been bitten by a Funnel Web spider while bushwalking. How would you treat the injury?? There are 7 Steps -DRABCD -Lie or sit the patient down -Pressure Immobilisation Bandage(PIB) -Ensure the casualty does not move -Reassure the patient - Monitor for shock and/or allergic reactions -Call 000

  10. 8. Hypothermia occurs when the body experiences overexposure to coldtemperatures causing the core body temperature to drop. How would you treat this? -DRABCD - Gently move patient to a warm, dry area protected from wind, rain, snow and cold -Lie the person down and remove any wet clothing -Wrap the patient in blankets, a space blanket or a sleeping bag -Ensure the head is covered to maintain body heat - If conscious, give warm fluids -If the patient is shivering, rewarming may be tried using body-to-body contact or applying hot water bottles etc. to the patient’s neck, armpits and groin -Call 000 and stay with the person till help arrives

  11. 9. What are the steps involved in asthma treatment? • DRABCD - If the person has an asthma management plan—follow it - Follow the asthma first aid procedure below - If the patient becomes unconscious follow the DRABCD

  12. 10)-Dry, gritty -Pain and/or redness -Twitching or spasms of the muscles -Discharge or blood -injuries to the surrounding facial tissue - Sensitivity to light -IrritationAre all symptoms of what? • Eye Injuries

  13. 11. Sarah has fallen over on her bike. She tells you her arm is in a lot of pain. You notice there is some swelling and slight deformity. How would you treat this injury? -It could be a possible Fracture -DRABCD - Control any bleeding -Encourage the patient not to move -Gently immobilise the fracture (how would we do this?) -Ensure bandages do not cut off circulation -Monitor for shock

  14. 12. Jack is having what you suspect to be a seizure as you know he suffers from Epilepsy. How do you assist him? -

  15. 13. You notice someone lying motionless on the floor at work. They have fallen from a ladder and seem to be bleeding from the leg. How would you treat the victim? • DRSABC • Suspect Possible Spinal Injury • If conscious treat laceration. • Clean the wound • Apply a sterile Non-adhesive dressing and bandage. • Reassure the patient and monitor for shock.

  16. 14. Explain the steps of DRSABC. • Danger, Response, Send for help, Airways, Breathing, Circulation

  17. 15. What does STOP stand for and in what first aid situation do we use it?

  18. 16. If the victim appears to be showing signs ofCold, • Confusion or anxiety• Rapid and weak pulse• Gasping or rapid breathing• Restlessness. How would you treat them? Ring 000. R Rest the patient, preferably with their head down and their feet up(except when there are fractures or spinal injuries). R Reassure the patient. R Rug them up, to maintain their body heat. For example, cover them with a blanket and ensure they are comfortable.- -The first aider should continue to observe the patient and maintain a clear airway. The onset of shock can be a delayed reaction, so the casualty needs to be monitored carefully even after their injuries or condition have been treated.

  19. 17. Your friend trips and falls and lands on a stick. The stick is sticking out of there arm and after a while you notice their skin is cold and clammy to the touch. What do you do? -STOP
