  3. Before Greek philosophers developed ideas that are still used today • Who are you? • Why are you here? • Philosophers tried to answer these “big” questions • Philosophy – love of wisdom • Philosopher – thinkers who believed the mind could understand everything

  5. After Sophists • Students should use their time to improve themselves • Taught how to win arguments • Taught to make good political speeches • No absolute right or wrong; what is right for one may be wrong for another • Today: public speaking

After Socrates • Athenian sculptor who left no writings • Absolute right or wrong with real knowledge within each of us • Socratic method – used reason to see things for yourself • Athenians accused him of teaching against the state and he was sentenced to death (399 B.C.) • Today: interaction with students

After Plato • Student of Socrates • Learn much through his writings • Republic teaches his thoughts on government • Democracy is no good, not fair or just • Ideal government: • Philosopher-kings: ruled with logic and wisdom • Warriors: defended the city • Everyone else: driven by desire, produce the goods, same education for men and women with equal jobs • Today: fair and just government
