  13. Role and contribution of partners VD-M has been fortunate to have several active partners that have been the driving force behind integration activities. An intitial list of the research interests and expertise of the participating Institutes was created at the start of the project. A list of key issues was produced after several debates and iterations. This facilitated spontaneous integration activities between partners primarily in the form of joint activities. JAs have a leader and a “living” content description. Tangible results are specified. JAs are posted on the web site so that all VD-M participants can join, comment, and contribute.

  14. Common Approach Achieved Examples: Comparison of multi-layer and single layer TE. Comparison between several packet metro solutions, optical and electrical. All-optical technologies for regeneration, wavelength conversion, and multicasting. Technology roadmap for metro network evolution.

  15. Criteria for VD Budget Allocation • Meeting participation:           1 point per year (0.5 per meeting) • Joint Activity:    5 points leading the activity:                   2 points (if >2 partners) • Joint paper:   4-1 points • Mobility: 1 point per week, 4 for a month, 6 for two months and over. • Teaching material: 2 points (English) 0.5 point (other language) • Overseas conferences:        based on availability and FCFS • Contribution to deliverables: 2 points per technical deliverable • Advisory Board: 1 point • No partner gets more than 18 points

  16. Resources employed: Effort 94% Permanent staff (AC): 6 m/m

  17. Resources employed: Budget 87%

  18. Plan for Second Year Joint Activities are a “living” list – several existing activities will continue and new will be established. “Neglected” technical areas have been identified and will be addressed. VD-M organises a Special Session on Metro networks at ONDM 2007. Invited speakers and VD-M contributions. There will be another technical workshop in Automn, i.e. well before the final plenary. Several joint papers are planed. A roadmap for metro network evolution will be produced.

  19. Scientific and Technical Impact Key aspects of metro networks are addressed by the VD. Moreover, and more important, a total view is established where different solutions and technologies are really seen for what they are worth, compared and evaluated against alternatives with a critical view. Technical and strategic technology evaluations are carried out, technology roadmaps produced. New innovative solutions are identified.

  20. Durable integration Networking and integration require time and continuity – they cannot be built once and then exist without support. EPhotonONe started the process of durable integration between its partners and EPhotonONe+ continues this paradigm. The value is enormous though not always easy to quantify. There has been a very clear improvement in the quality and more durable integration each year. The value of integration is being manifested in many ways - the way we draw upon each others’ resources, ask the experts directly, inform everyone about new developments, send references and alerts. But not least the way we slowly adapt our research to avoid dublications, exchange expertise and differentiate.
