  2. Why are we here? • To give a brief overview of how we start to teach reading and phonics in school. • To demonstrate how you can best support your child at home.

  3. Fitting in reading can be tricky! I know we’re late. Hurry up! Eat your cereal and read that book! I can’t concentrate! It’s far too noisy!

  4. Top tips to make reading easier • Routine – find a good regular time • No distractions • 1-1 time – take turns if necessary • A little often – 10 minutes a day • Make it fun – a pleasurable experience for everyone • If it’s not working – rethink, talk to us. • Try to find time to read to your child as well. • Use pure sounds and encourage your child to sound out and blend the words – please ask if you’re not sure.

  11. Split digraphs – (you might have learnt this as ‘magic E’). h o m e

  12. Tricky words or high frequency words • There are some words which you cannot sound out and which children just need to learn by sight e.g. come, was. • The most common ones which occur in the reading scheme are sent home on the coloured cards.

  13. Make it fun • There are plenty of games you can play to make learning to read more interesting. • Try playing i-spy, the normal way or by ‘sound-talking’ the items to encourage blending. • If your child finds the word cards boring, try hiding them around the house.

  14. Reading with understanding • Talk about; characters, plot, setting etc. • Think: who, what, when, where, why.
