Understanding Ecosystems: Core Vocabulary and Definitions
This unit focuses on ecosystems, highlighting the interactions between abiotic (non-living) and biotic (living) factors. Key vocabulary includes ecosystem, biotic, abiotic, organism, population, community, environment, habitat, and species. A thorough understanding of these terms is essential for grasping how living organisms relate to one another and their environment. Explore how individual organisms coexist, form populations, and contribute to diverse communities within their habitats. This foundational knowledge is crucial for studying ecology and environmental science.

Abiotic All of the non-living factors within an environment (soil, temperature, rocks, weather)
Organism An individual form of life that is capable of growing, metabolizing nutrients, and usually reproducing.
Population A group of organisms of the same species located within the same geographical location
Community All of the populations of different species in a particular area
Environment All of the abiotic and biotic factors within the same geographic location
