  2. Choose subject • Do background reading • Find reliable sources • Print • Periodical literature • Online databases • Websites

  3. Source Cards • Use 3x5 card • Use one card for each source • Number each card in upper right hand corner • Record all necessary publishing information on card • Give call number or material location in lower right hand corner

  5. Note Card • Use 4x6 card • Use separate note card for each idea • Write number of source card used in upper right hand corner • Write page number of information at bottom • Be careful with non print page numbers

  7. Note Card • Place information indented under subject heading • Summarize in your own words • Or paraphrase using some of author’s words which must be cited in the paper • Or use a direct quote which must be quoted exactly and noted in body of paper • Always one idea

  11. Citing Sources • Do not cite information found in several sources – considered common knowledge • Cite when • Summarizing • Paraphrasing • Quoting someone else’s words

  12. Examples of parenthetical citation • Source with one author • Last name of author followed by page number and enclosed in parenthesis • Ex. (Berg 23).

  13. Examples of parenthetical citation • Source with no author • Give first three words of of title not using a, an, the • Ex. (“Huskers Win”). ------Notice quotation marks around title and no page number

  14. Examples of parenthetical citation • Source with two or more authors • Use all author’s names • Ex. (Smolley and Bruce 128). –Notice page number available

  15. Examples of parenthetical citation • Author’s name given in paragraph • Paper says according to Berg so only need page number • Ex. (23).

  16. Final Draft • Use Times New Roman • Use Size 12 • Set margins at 1 inch all around • Use header at the top of each page which is .5 inches from top • Put last name and page number in header on the left
