  1. Genesis 3:1-6 • Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God actually say, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?“ And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.”But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.“ So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

  2. How Sin Is Committed The First Sin

  3. God Has Finished His Work • And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was an evening and there was morning, the sixth day. • Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. Genesis 1:31; 2:1-2

  4. Resist The Urge To Read Backward • The Serpent • Mankind • Sin • Death

  5. The Serpent Lied • Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, Did God actually say, You shall not eat of any tree in the garden? • . . . But the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Gen 3:1-5) What did he do to the woman?

  6. Adam and Eve (Mankind) And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden, but God said, You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.” (3:2-3) So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise.” she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave to her husband who was with her, and he ate. (3:6)

  7. Sin – What Is it? • And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.‘ (3:2-3) • So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate (3:6). • He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?“ The man said, "The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate. Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent deceived me, and I ate." (3:11-13)

  8. What Does Death Mean? • And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (2:16-17) • but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'" • But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. (3:3-4) • God, Satan and Eve used the same word. • They all understood the same thing by the word. • No one understood “spiritual death” • That doctrine is developed later in Scripture (this is the first sin) • The physical comes first then we understand the spiritual (adultery)

  9. Important Lessons From Genesis 3 • Satan cannot make man do anything • Much more since Christ has defeated him after the cross. • Christ came to defeat the Devil (Heb 2:14-15) • Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.

  10. Temptation Which Leads To Sin Is Progressive • She saw the tree was good for food • A tree to be desired to make one wise • She took of its fruit and ate • Everyone of us is so challenged in our own lives. • We stand in front of the trees all day long and we have to make a decision. • We all go through the exact same process to sin. • Which is why all sins are the same before God!

  11. Each Of Us Is Responsible For Our Own Actions – No One Else! • Adam was held responsible • Who told you that you were naked? • Did you eat of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat? • The woman you gave me gave me of the fruit and I ate. • Eve was held responsible • What have you done? • The serpent deceived me and I did eat.

  12. The First Sin In Human History • Satan lied • Man deceived (held responsible) • God aware (approached) • Lust of the flesh • Lust of the eyes • Pride of life • The transgression of the law • Worthy of immediate death • Received Grace and Mercy
