  1. World Biomes Tundra By: Julia and Kodee

  2. Temperatures • Temperatures don’t range far apart in the winter to summer months. • The temperatures never go over 45-50 degrees Fahrenheit • The winter temperatures are always around 20 degrees Fahrenheit • Summer temperatures range from 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit.

  3. Rainfall • Happens mostly during the winter. • Gets 25 cm (10 in) of precipitation per year. • Gets mostly snow and sleet.

  4. POLYGONS • Landforms that make up most of the Tundra are: mountains, valleys, ice sheets, frozen waterfalls, and lakes • Three unique ones are: pingos, frost boils, and polygons • Pingos are dome shaped mounds consisting of a layer of soil over a large core of ice. • Frost boils also known as frost scars are up wellings of mud that occur through permafrost heave and cryoturbation • Polygons are just what they sound like – they form from the freeze thaw cycle- they are pieces of ground shaped like polygons PINGOS FROST BOILS POLYGONS

  5. Insects • 6 insects live here • mosquitos • moths • butterflies • flies • artic bumble bees • northern grasshoppers • Artic bumble bees (BomboisPolaris) • Northern grasshoppers (Melanoplus borealis borealis) • Both adapted to weather.

  6. Animals • Polar bear • Grey wolf • Caribou • Artic fox • Artic hare • Musk ox • Grizzly bear • Ermine • Snowy owl • Harliquin duck

  7. Animal Facts • Polar bear • 6.5-8.5 feet • Good eye sight • 330 – 1,300 lbs • Keen smelling • Ermine • 7-13 inches • Known for white fur • 10 ounces • Rock ptarmigan • Short feathers on feet • No bigger than a chicken

  8. Location • Most are in Canada and Greenland • Some tundra’s are in Europe and Asia

  9. Most Common Tundra Artic Tundra • Youngest biome • Latitudes 55 – 70 degrees • - 70 degrees Fahrenheit

  10. Conclusion • We hope you learned a lot about the tundra. • Animals • Plants • Temperature • Rain fall • Landforms • Insects
