  1. Part 1 Leadership in the New Testament Church

  2. Two Offices A SHORT CONFESSION OF FAITH IN TWENTY ARTICLES BY JOHN SMYTH1609 Article 16: The ministers of the church are, not only bishops ("Episcopos"), to whom the power is given of dispensing both the word and the sacraments, but also deacons, men and widows, who attend to the affairs of the poor and sick brethren.

  3. Two Offices A DECLARATION OF FAITH OF ENGLISH PEOPLE REMAINING AT AMSTERDAM1611 Article 20: That the Officers of every Church or congregation are either Elders, who by their office do especially feed the flock concerning their souls, Acts 20:28, 1 Peter 5:2, 3, or Deacons, Men and Women who by their office relieve the necessities of the poor and impotent brethren concerning their bodies, Acts 6:1–4.

  4. Three interchangable words: • Episkopos • Bishop or overseer • Philippians 1:1 Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ, To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

  5. Three interchangable words: • Episkopos • Bishop or overseer • Presbuteros • Elder • Acts 14:23 — 23 So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed. • 1 Timothy 5:17 — 17 Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honour, especially those who labour in preaching and teaching.

  6. Acts 20:17 Now from Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church to come to him. • Acts 20:28 Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.

  7. Titus 1:5–7 For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you—6 if a man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of dissipation or insubordination. 7 For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money,

  8. Three interchangable words: • Episkopos • Bishop or overseer • Presbuteros • Elder • Poimen • Shepherd (Pastor) • Ephesians 4:11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,

  9. Three interchangable words: • Acts 20:28 Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. • 1 Peter 5:1–2 The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: 2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly;

  10. Plural Leadership • Acts 14:23 So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed. • Acts 20:17From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church. • Titus 1:5For this reason I left you in Crete, that you should set in order the things that are lacking, and appoint elders in every city as I commanded you—

  11. Plural Leadership • Philippians 1:1 This letter is from Paul and Timothy, slaves of Christ Jesus. I am writing to all of God’s holy people in Philippi who belong to Christ Jesus, including the elders and deacons.
