  8. Necessary Inference • Typically, rejected by many, with the intent of broadening the boundaries of scripture to appeal to more, even if their beliefs are contrary to the teaching of God’s word • In this lesson we appeal to common sense and reasoning as we determine what we ought to do

Necessary Inference • Know us, necessary or unavoidable conclusions, necessary implication, etc. • “That which, though neither expressly exemplified, yet is necessarily implied by clear import and meaning of the language used.” • By putting together all the facts of a subject, using reason and logic, we reach the only logical conclusion.

Necessary Inference • Example: I can say I am 53 years old as a statement, OR you can look at my birth certificate and necessarily infer the same answer. • Example: I can say I am thinking of the number 5, OR I can ask What is the answer of 3 + 2? which is concluded as 5. • Detectives and juries both use necessary conclusion

  11. Necessary Inference • The Bible and reason • Reason – to think or discuss in a logical manner. To form conclusions or inference based upon a premise • In the Bible, typically, to engage in an exchange or discuss/argue a point seeking the true conclusion

  16. Rules for Nec. Inference • As we have seen, NI was used to establish fact and authority. • We need total honesty (Matthew 28:19-20), objective! • Proper application requires effort (work), wanting to understand! cf. Acts 17:11

  17. Rules for Nec. Inference • NI is based upon what is already known by precept, command and/or example • NI will harmonize with the rest of revealed scripture on a subject (1 Corinthians 14:33) • It is the only logical conclusion that can be inferredcf. Genesis 1:1, John 3:2, etc.

  18. Applying Nec. Inference • Acts 20:7, every first day. • They assembled regularly (1 Cor. 16:1-2, 11:17-20) • Since every week has a first day, we can infer we should partake of the Lord’s Supper every Sunday. • Any other frequency is without Biblical precedent

  19. Applying Nec. Inference The Lord’s Supper unleavened bread and fruit of the vine • When instituted, Jesus used elements from the Passover meal (Matthew 26:17-29) • If we are to follow the pattern of scripture, we must use the same elements.

  20. Applying Nec. Inference • Matthew 19:9, except for fornication. • We can conclude from Jesus’ teaching that one can divorce and remarry ONLY if their spouse commits adultery against them. • There is no other recorded exception!

  21. Applying Nec. Inference • Baptism – a study of the meaning of the word (immerse), as well as numerous examples and passages (Romans 6:3-4, Acts 8:38-39, etc.) • We can conclude this is the ONLY acceptable form of baptism. • We can also conclude that baptism puts is a part of the process of our salvation – Mark 16:16, 1 Peter 3:21 • Also, the fact that every example was believers, we can conclude that infants are not to be baptized

  22. Applying Nec. Inference • Hebrews 10:25 the command to assemble requires a place. • We have authority for a place based upon necessary inference. • Many issues of morality – modesty, soberness, proper behavior, being separate – call for conclusions as to what we can and cannot do and the need to apply standards to our conduct!

  23. Let us resolve that we will study His word to learn to follow Him, both in what we do and how we do it!
