When: Tuesday, September 27th from 4-6 PM • Where: Bio Research Building, Room 1103 • What: University of Maryland pre-health societies will be present to provide in depth information and answer questions about their respective fields with the intension of providing students with an educated decision on what student pre-health organization best suites them.   9. 85 Chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant • Soluble in non-polar organic solvents • Administered by smoking, vaporizing, oral ingestion, transdermal patch, IV injection, sublingual absorption, or rectal suppository • Metabolized in the liver • Stored in fat General Information

Receptors found in mammals, birds, fish, and reptiles • CB1- in the basal ganglia, limbic system, cerebellum, and reproductive systems • Not in medulla oblongata (responsible for respiratory and cardiovascular functions) • Responsible for euphoric and anticonvulsive effects • CB2- in the immune system • Responsible for anti-inflammatory effects Receptors

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)- CB1/CB2 • analgesic (eases moderate pain) • Neuroprotectant (protects neurons from apoptosis) • Cannabidiol (CBD)- has no affinity for either receptor • Antagonizes cannabinoid agonists (like THC, preventing short-term memory loss) • 5-HT1A agonist- involved in antidepressant, anxiolytic, and neuroprotective effects • Cannabinol (CBN)- CB2, some CB1 Most prevalent

Dronabinol (Marinol)- appetite stimulant, anti-emetic (anti-nausea/vomiting) • Nabilone (Cesamet) • Sativex- neuropathic pain/spasticity • Rimonabant (Acomplia)- oral spray used for anti-obesity and smoking cessation • HU-331- potential anti-cancer drug • Inhibits topoisomerase II (manage DNA tangles and supercoils) • Levonantradol (Nantrodolum)- anti-emetic and analgesic • Not currently used medically Synthetic Cannabinoids

  14. Pharmaceutical Issue Direct-To-Consumer Advertising (DTCA)

  15. DTCA is the promotion of prescription drugs through newspaper, magazine, television, and internet marketing. • Drug companies also produce a range of other materials, including brochures and videos that are available in doctors offices or designed to be given to patients by medical professionals via patient groups. • The United States is only one of two countries where DTCA is legal, however drug industries are campaigning to have DTCA allowed in Europe and Canada. The drug industry claims that DTCA advertising helps to ‘educate’ consumer of potential conditions. • It encourages them to see their doctor for diagnosis and treatment. • While acknowledging that DTCA increases the amount spent on prescription drugs, they argue that in the long run early treatment and diagnosis reduces spending on other medical services, such as hospitalisation. Critics of DTCA argue that the industry's advertising is primarily emotional in style as well as appealing in imagery to tactically understate the adverse side-effects and as such is misleading. • Often claimed health benefits are overstated. • DTCA results in over diagnosis of a condition and the inappropriate use of prescription drugs, even where non-drug treatments are as or more effective. • Thus DTCA unnecessarily drive up the cost of healthcare, without guaranteed improvement of the health of those treated.   18. A Drug Topics survey found that 73% of pharmacists attitudes towards DTCA were negative, with feelings that DTCA efforts were “excessive.” Can DTCA techniques be beneficial to pharmacists? If so, how? • As a pharmacist, how would you tell a patient that a drug they found via DTCA methods is “excessive”? • Another issue pertaining to DTCA is pharmaceutical representatives having a lack of knowledge of the product they are selling. How could this be harmful? Discussion
