  3. Our Big Goals: • I have set big goals for this class this year. They can only be met if we all work together. • I have to do my best job of being a teacher. • You have to do your best job of being a student.

  4. What is the Achievement Gap? Low-income non-white students are underperforming academically compared to their high-income white peers

  5. Is this okay? Is it right? NO!!!!!!! WE NEED TO CLOSE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP NOW!

  6. By the time students in low income communities reach the fourth grade, they are already 3grade levels below students who grow up in more wealthy school districts.

  7. I AM GOING TO ASK HALF OF YOU TO STAND UP. STATISTICS SHOW THAT ONLY HALF OF YOU WILL GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL! Statistics show only 1 of you will graduate from college!

  8. IS THAT FAIR? OF COURSE NOT BUT WE WON’T LET IT HAPPEN!!

  9. About 50 percent of students in low-income communities will not graduate from high school by the time they're 18 years old. • Those who do graduate will perform on average at an eighth-grade level. • Only 1 in 10 students from these low-income communities will graduate from college.

The Value of your Education -If you go don’t graduate from high school, you can expect to earn about $23,000 per year. -If you graduate high school, you can expect to earn about $30,000 per year. -If you graduate from college, you can expect to make $52,000 per year. -If you go on to earn a Master’s degree or higher, you can bring home more than $62,000 each year.

  12. Passing is NOT enough • Anything worth doing is worth doing well. • We need to raise the bar for all of KEY. • Excellence should be our goal, not just getting by…90% will lead us to be college-bound.

  13. But Why Is Science Important??? Science Helps Explain the World! – There is so much we don’t know in the world Science Helps Create Technology! – Cellphones, I-Pods, Computers, etc. Science Helps Improve Our Lives! – Cure Disease, Improving Medications, etc. Without Science, the World Wouldn’t Make Sense! – Science is all around us!

  14. REPN • Respect yourself, your classmates, teachers, community, and school building! • Engage in all lessons and activities! • Prepare for class every single day! • Never, ever, ever give up! • Each week the students REPN the most will have their picture posted on our REPN HALL OF FAME!
