  2. Basics • Author of Angela’s Ashes, Tis • Born in August 19, 1931 in Brooklyn New York • Lived in Limerick Ireland • A child of seven, parents were Irish Immigrants

  3. Childhood • New York, hard to get job • Returned to Limerick, Ireland, where parents born • Father abandoned family later • Three of seven siblings died from malnutrition • At 10, almost died of typhoid Fever • 13, quit school to get job • 14, hired by Limerick Post Office

  4. Teenage Years • At 17, made a life changing decision • When 19, went back to U.S. working at various jobs • Became student at N.Y. University

  5. After College • After graduation with college degree, teacher • After creative writing teaching, wrote story about his life • Also wrote a musical called “A Couple of Biaguards” with his brother • Angel’s Ashes, sold over 4 million copies, sold to 27 different countries, 17 different languages

  6. Angel’s Ashes • Setting, Brooklyn ,New York and Limerick, Ireland • Parents of Frank McCourt were Angela Sheehan, and Malachy McCourt • Lives in rural area, poor • Father alcoholic, gains job later • Mother doesn’t have job, poor • Frank and brothers often scavenge food and goods

Anglela’s Ashes Continued • Angela’s Sister and mother begrudge any help they have to give her • Children have very ragged clothes • Frank develops typhoid • Later gets job helping a neighbor • Ceiling collapses later, move out • Family forced to live with relatives • Start working for Post Office, telegram delivery boy • Story ends when he sails to New York, starting new life as 19.

  8. Career • Member of National Arts Club and recipient of The International Center in New York’s Award of Excellence • Received Many Awards (Pulitzer Prize, National Book Critics Circle) • Author of “Tis” • Also wrote book “Teacher Man” in 2005 • Most famous work Angela’s Ashes
