Massasoit was the leader – or Grand Sachem - of the Wampanoag indians. Massasoit made peace with the Colonists that lasted over 50 years. He died in 1660. When Massasoit died, his oldest son took over. Wamsutta – aka Alexander. Wamsutta died mysteriously.

  1. Massasoit was the leader – or Grand Sachem - of the Wampanoag indians. Massasoit made peace with the Colonists that lasted over 50 years. He died in 1660.

  2. When Massasoit died, his oldest son took over. Wamsutta – aka Alexander. Wamsutta died mysteriously.

  3. His brother, Metacom, aka King Philip, became Grand Sachem.

  4. Philip didn’t trust the colonists because he thought they had tricked his father, cheated his people and killed his brother. Philip was mad and wanted to fight back. He planned for 12 years before he did anything.

  5. In 1675, Philip called a meeting in Berkley…at Conspiracy Island – at the end of Bay View Avenue. Taunton River Bay View Avenue Assonet River We live in Berkley, Massachusetts – an ancient town on the Taunton River. Although Colonial Settlers first started living here in the 1630s, the Wampanoag and other Indians had hunted, fished and camped here for thousands of years.

  6. Legend has it that this meeting included Sachems from all the major nations in the region: • Pokanoket • Sakonnet • Wampanoag • Narragansett • Norwottock • Nemasket • Squakheag • Nipmuk • Agawam
