  1. Our Solar System by Mr. Herrigel

  2. Our Sun • 330,000X greater mass than Earth. • If the Sun were the size of a soccer ball, the Earth would be the size of a BB. • It’s HOT! And it’s HUGE!

  3. The Terrestrial Planets(Made mostly of rock and metal) • Mercury • Venus • Earth • Mars

  4. Mercury • Closest planet to the Sun. • Orbits the Sun in only 88 days!

  5. Venus • The brightest object in the sky next to the Sun and Moon. • Orbits the Sun in 225 days.

  6. Earth • Our home. • The densest planet. • Orbits the Sun in 365 days. • Has a large supply of unfrozen water.

  7. Earth’s Moon • The only natural satellite of Earth. • Second brightest object in the sky, after the Sun. • The Moon’s gravity is the main cause of our tides.

  8. Mars • Orbits the Sun in 687 days. • Sometimes referred to as the “Red Planet”. • Has the largest mountain in the solar system - 78,000 feet.

  9. Asteroid Belt • Most of them are located in a “belt” between Mars and Jupiter. • The total mass of all known asteroids is less than that of the Moon.

  10. Gas Giant Planets • Jupiter • Saturn • Uranus • Neptune

  11. Jupiter • Largest planet in our solar system. • More than twice as big as all of the other planets combined. • Takes 4,333 days to orbit the Sun. • Made of 90% hydrogen and 10% helium.

  12. Saturn • Takes 10,760 days to orbit the Sun. • Sixth planet from the Sun. • 2nd largest planet. • Least dense of the planets. • It’s made of gases -hydrogen and helium.

  13. Uranus • Takes 30,685 days to orbit the Sun. • Spins sideways. • Made of rock, ice, hydrogen, and helium.

  14. Neptune • Takes 60,190 days to orbit the Sun. • 4th largest planet. • Made of ice, rock, hydrogen, and helium.

  15. Pluto (Dwarf Planet) • Smaller than 7 of the solar system’s moons. • Sometimes crosses the orbit of Neptune, making Neptune the most distant planet from the Sun for a few years. • Takes 90,550 days to orbit the Sun.

  16. Relative Sizes of Sun and Planets

  17. How to remember the planets • My - Mercury • Very - Venus • Educated - Earth • Mother - Mars • Just - Jupiter • Served -Saturn • Us - Uranus • Nine - Neptune • Pizzas - Pluto

  18. And the yearning for learning goes on and on...
