  2. Mid-America Regional Council • A nonprofit association of city and county governments • Covers 9 counties and 120 cities • A forum for issues and initiatives that cross city, county and state lines • A major focus is helping the region become more sustainable

  3. Four Initiatives • Metro Green • TIGER and Transit • Complete Streets (or Livable Streets) • Creating Sustainable Places

  4. Metro Green • Action plan for interconnected system of public and private natural areas, greenways and trails • 1,144 mile trail system (200 miles constructed) • Vision developed in 1991by the American Society of Landscape Architects • MARC helps to identify funding, promotes connections, develops standards • Now also connected with streamway system to manage stormwater and provide recreation

  5. TIGER and Transit • TIGER is $50 million US DOT Project • $26 million for the Green Impact Zone • $24 million for Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) improvements in several corridors • Shawnee Mission Parkway/Metcalf • State Ave • North Oak • 24/40 Highway • Bus stations and pedestrian connectivity

  7. TIGER and Transit • Alternative analyses for Rock Island, I-70 east,71 Highway south • Alternative analysis for downtown streetcars, River Market to Crown Center • Down to two alternatives – Mainor Grand

Complete Streets • Streets designed for pedestrians, bicycles, transit, as well as cars • Partnership with Building a Healthier Heartland • BHH marketing to public, partners marketing to local governments, MARC helping implementation • Initial project funded by HCF to develop Complete Streets in Raytown and KCMO • MARC to develop guide for local governments this fall

Creating Sustainable Places • $4.25 million, three-year initiative to move sustainable development plans to reality • Focus on sustainable plans and developments in six corridors • Metcalf/Shawnee Mission Parkway, State Ave, North Oak Trafficway, Highway 40 East, Rock Island Corridor, Troost South

Creating Sustainable Places • Develop tools to facilitate and assess sustainable development • Visualization, economic and fiscal feasibility, sustainable development codes and incentives • Demonstration projects • Housing, workforce, Green Impact Zone housing, equity, education, engagement, indicators
