    2. Background Occurred at midday on July 10, 1976 It happened outside of Seveso, Italy at the ICMESA company The ICMESA company is an industrial plant The ICMESA company has been used for over 30 years before it was shutdown People back then did not know the toxicity of dioxin

    4. Causes of the Disaster There was operational failures in the ICMESA plant There was no cooling in the production cycle The storage vessels ruptured letting the dioxin vent out There was no device to decrease or stop the toxic material as it vented out

    5. Causes of the Disaster(cont.) Once the dioxin was out of the industrial plant the wind blew the dioxin in the direction of Seveso The disaster was worse because of the poor communication between the ICMESA plant and the plants

    6. Scope of Damage/Death There was no fatalities There are many new health concerns for the residents of Seveso

    7. Immediate Impacts Dioxin cloud covered the town The start of many future health problems Animals were killed immediately Buildings were destroyed

    8. Short Term Impacts chloracne appeared on victims of dioxin crisis There were quarantine zones set up - Zone A, Zone B, Zone R The Seveso Directive was put in effect Toxic material buried under reinforced concrete People diagnosed with abnormal liver function and abnormal nerve conduction
