Lewis (The Chronicles of Narnia author) • best known as the author of The Hobbit and its sequel The Lord of the Rings • strongly confident Roman Catholic • father of the modern high fantasy genre • major fantasy works were published in the 1950s

T. – background • Tolkien was churchman • his favourite places from the area where he lived as a young boy have they paraphrases in his books • he was annoyed by civilisation arrival to his peaceful nature • inspiration for Frodo‘s gardener and best friend (Sam Gamgee) was name of the inventor of special wool • he took part in WWI and he didn‘t like it • somebody say that Adolf Hitler was an inspiration for the main evil character in The Lord of the Rings, Sauron

T. – early life • born on the 3rd January, 1892 at Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State (situated in the south of Africa) • at the age of four he and his brother were taken back to England by their mother • family moved to Sarehole, on the south-eastern edge of Birmingham • his mother died when he was only twelve

T. – middle life • Tolkien married Edith Bratt • took part in WWI, which affected all his life • obtained a post on the New English Dictionary • wrote for his children the story of The Hobbit • publisher Stanley Unwin • The Lord of the Ringstook twelve years to complete • Tolkien and his wife lived near Oxford for most of their life
