  1. Acceptable Use Policies

  2. Hey, It’s Me! I’m Tek – your i-SAFE guide. I’m a part of i-SAFE. i-SAFE is concerned with teaching you how to be safe online. We want you to recognize and avoid dangerous, destructive or unlawful online behavior. Also, we hope to empower you to communicate what you learn from i-SAFE with others.

  3. For this lesson you will become familiar with Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs) and review your school’s AUP. The Plan

  4. Ok – Let’s Start! Your teacher is going to give you the AUP activity sheet. Together we’re going to read over it.

  5. What is an AUP? AUP stands for Acceptable Use Policy. This policy is designed to educate students, teachers, and parents about what is acceptable when it comes to using school computers. It usually details privileges of use, rules, and consequences for abuse.

  6. Why should schools have an AUP in place? Discuss this question as a class.

  7. Why do students, parents, and school faculty need to be educated on the AUP? Discuss this question as a class.

  8. What do you think should be covered in an AUP Discuss this question as a class.

  9. Take a moment to read through the activity sheet as a class. Then brainstorm a list of items you feel should be covered in an AUP

  10. In this lesson we’re going to review your school’s AUP You can complete this activity in groups or as a class.

  11. Activity Time Your teacher will either divide you into groups and give each group a copy of your school’s AUP or you will work as a class using an overhead copy of the school AUP. You are to discuss your school AUP. How does it rate? Is it missing anything?

  12. So what do you think: Does your school’s AUP cover all necessary information? What could be added to the school’s AUP to make it better? Should any changes be made to the AUP?

  13. I hope you learned something – I know I did! All right – Time for another Activity!!! You’re going to write to your Principal or School Board and share the changes you feel should be made to your school’s AUP.

  14. How Do you Know When You’re Done? Have you: 1. Reviewed your school’s AUP? 2. Discussed with your class what you have learned? 3. Written to your Principal or School Board?
