  1. Let’s dive in“isomer” A discoverylesson, part II 29 July 2011

  2. Checkinghomework – BINGO refreshingofbasicconcepts • Atom • Compound • Element • Formula • Molecule • Property set • Structure • Substance

  3. Same formula – differentmolecules: the germof the isomer idea

  4. ACTIVITY 2 1. Connect FOUR carbonatoms and TEN hydrogenatomstogive a molecular formula C4H10 • Eachcarbonatom (C) mustbebondedto 4 atoms • Eachhydrogenatom (H) mustbesingle-bonded Build up asmany DIFFERENT STRUCTURES aspossible. WARNING: don’t show yourmasterpiecesto the othergroups! 2. Describeonestructure at a time, withonlyallowedterms, withoutshowingitto the others. 3. Collect the moleculesthatcorrespondedto the samedescription

  5. ACTIVITY 2 (cont.)

  6. Metacognition • Anydoubts? • Trytoconnectwhatwehavefoundto reality • Whylinear, L, C, Z shapesresultinerchangeablewhile the T structureisstrikingdifferent? • Maybeweneed some furtherassumptionaboutwhatatoms in moleculs can or cannot do? • Whythereisonly a single propane C3H8? • Whyitwasimpossibletoeverybodytomake a ringstructure? Tryagain…somethinghastobeleftout…rememberthisstructure: “cyclobutane”.

  7. Follow up • Whatdoesmeanthatbutane “hasanisomer”? • Whatdoesmeanthatpropane “is a single isomersubstance”? some clues: only son/daughter, brother(s) • Whycyclobutaneisnotanisomerof the twobutanes? Write down what “isomer” means in yourownwords and then compare and discussdifferenceswithyourneighbour.

  8. Homeworks • how many hydrogen atoms would be necessary for the pentane-C5 hydrocarbons, for structures without rings? • How many isomeric structures could be made with that formula?
