  5. Ireland – the general problems There are lots of preconceived and assumed ideas • Negative attitude and lack of confidence • Lack of self belief and self promotion • No need for language skills • General gloom and doom • Priority towards F.D.I. and what we can get or receive • Imitate not originate • Not looking at what we ourselves can do • Lack of pride

  6. Negative beliefs • Apathy and negativity in general Irish life • Inevitability of the 'Emigrant nation' • 'Send an Irishman abroad and he will be successful' • Many small successful business have been sold off to multi–nationals, usually to the U.S. • Number of very successful Irish CEO's running businesses abroad • Why do we outsource everything abroad? We need to believe we can do it ourselves

  7. Specific problems • Belief that we can produce them • Lack of confidence • Awareness of Irish products and services Where they do exist • Many are struggling just to survive • Often companies have only a local focus • With poor or a complete lack of promotion • Many are not promoted as Irish products at all We do not use • All the talents and unique resources that we posses • And to the best of our abilities

  8. Irishness • Our Irishness is a unique selling aspect that we do not use to its full potential. • Ireland has unique qualities that can be tapped into by businesses • Use of local names • The Irish language e.g. for business product names • Promote products as Irish and being from Ireland • Confidence in our unique qualities rather than copying • Look at all the products from continental Europe - all their food and beverages use local names and the native language • All these can differentiate products and services • The Irish are well received abroad We should use and promote our Irishness

  9. More Irish than the Irish • They have brought great additions • Culture • Positivity and Openess • Activity • Diversity • Strength and Belief • Hard work • Over 1 in 10 people in Ireland were not born here • originally but now call it home

  10. Sport as an inspiration Irish rugby / GAA / Irish soccer • Look at what we can do with belief and attitude • Also they fight on even when knocked back

  11. Irish business that inspires 2008 Ernest & Young entrepreneur of the year Michael Carr and John Flaherty established the C&F group in 1989. They are headquartered in Athenry, Co. Galway • with a purpose built 180,000 sq foot facility. • Turnover reached $100m in 2007 with factories in the Philippines, Czech Rep., China, U.K. , U.S.A. and Ireland

  12. Every day inspiration We see examples every day if we look hard enough Ireland is a huge giver to charity at home and abroad Voluntary groups and charities • Homeless • Special needs • Resident and community groups A person voluntarily cleaning up rubbish in their area shows pride and a can do attitude. Yet many would wonder why they are doing it. We need to have a Culture of Encouragement

  13. ‘Is Feidir Linn’ • Positive attitude • Self-belief • Determination • Self reliance • Culture change We can • be a producer and not just a consumer society • are an intelligent and articulate people • with a culture and belief change be successful We need to build this into our psyche

There is huge potential What are Ireland’s resources ? • Resourcefullness • Hard working • Being the under dog • Intelligence and Articulation • Personality and ‘gift of the gab’ • Friendliness and storytelling • Community spirit and charitable nature Untapped and unused resources unique to Ireland • Ireland has not reached its full potential • We need to make and produce what people need We will start small but can grow

  15. Belief • I believe in • our own ability and our own potential • I want to capture and promote that with my business  • Use our own creativity • Not just use or import foreign ideas and then implement them badly • They are then just poor imitations • We can - design, produce, make, grow and supply - • many of the goods and services that we currently import • Starting small – how great things are built

  17. So how do we change • Educating people • Make people think • Need to believe that we can achieve and produce like other countries already do • Other nationalities have the mindset that we need • We need to believe in own ability to create, run and develop own businesses in the short medium and long term. • Buy local and buy Irish Look at what you actually buy every day

Ach le obair chrua, diongbháilteacht agus • creidiúint láidir, is féidir leis an talamh is boichte in Éirinn torthaí a • shíoladh. • Is tairbhe íontach, uathúil é an Teanga agus an Cultúr Gaelach nach • mbaintear go leor leasa as.
