  3. Academic Graduation Requirements • Transcripts- mailed home last week! - CHECK CAREFULLY - Summer school grades, CBE, E-school grades, Correspondence Courses, etc. - GPA - Class rank - Recommended or Distinguished r - 24 Credits

  4. Additional Graduation Requirements • 50 hours of community service (pro-rated if student hasn’t attended HPHS all four years) • Pass all sections of TAKS

  7. CLASS OF ’09~Trick or Treat! • Apply early! • October 31st is our “Trick or Treat” Target Date for senior applications.

Top 5 Signs Mom & Dad Are Losing It: • #5 – Dig out old report cards to calculate son’s GPA to .0001 accuracy. • #4 – Revive friendship with obnoxious in-law who graduated from Duke. • #3 – Send flowers to phone receptionists at UT, A&M, and Yale. • #2 – Tell friends that “we” are applying to Stanford and USC. • #1 – Put vanity license plates reading “730CR/770M” on the family S.U.V.

  10. SAT Subject Tests (SAT II’s) • 40-50 highly competitive-admission schools require these for acceptance • Given on all test dates except March • Can take up to 3 subject tests each date • Used by colleges in different ways: ~For admission ~For placement in appropriate courses ~For advising

Checking Application Status • Approximately 2 to 3 weeks after sending an application, the senior should check the status of the application with the admissions office to be sure the application is complete. • Ways to check application status: - Naviance - On-line at college’s admission website - by e-mail to admission rep - by phone to admission office

Letters of Recommendation Teachers • Politely ask for teacher recommendations. • Be sensitive to a teacher’s hesitancy. • Give plenty of notice – AT LEAST 3 weeks • Provide the teacher with: - your resume - names of colleges & deadline dates - any college Teacher Recommendation forms - stamped & addressed envelopes ( with no return address) • It is the responsibility of the student to follow up with the teacher to make sure deadlines are met. • Write a thank you note to the teacher.

  15. Letters of Recommendation Outside Use Caution • Outside letters should provide important information about you that the application does not address. • If your file is filled with “extra” letters, the admissions committee might never read the important letter from your teacher who saw your great potential and academic growth.

  16. Scholarships National and college-specific scholarships: • Check with each college’s Office of Financial Aid for college-specific opportunities. • All national scholarships will be posted on Naviance. • Applications to apply for local scholarships become available in the SPRING. • Recipients are announced at Honors Day.

  17. Financial Aid Seminar • December 4, 2008 HPHS auditorium • An expert will present financial aid tips and answer questions. • Watch for an e-mail invitation to seniors and parents.

  18. College Fair Highland Park High School COLLEGE NIGHT! - September 17, 2008 - HPHS Cafeteria, Main Gym and classrooms - 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. - Over 200 colleges represented!
