Local • Housing; • In 2013 a new Base Housing policy was implemented which requires all Military to accept On-Base Housing. • Civilian employees will not be offered base housing unless all military are housed and it can be determined that the civilian could be housed without impacting the military policy. • Is usually smaller and built closer to neighboring houses than accustomed to • Furnished and Unfurnished housing is available from base RPP in numerous locations which are close to or short distances from the base Japan Sustainment Road-show
Local (cont) • Off base Housing Allotments; • Allotments are given to live off base • The amount is determined by Wage Scale and the number of dependents • It allows you to find suitable housing while in Japan • It aids with rent and utilities (water , gas, electric, sewer, etc) Internet, Cable and Phone services are not considered utilities • The allotment generally is sufficient to more than adequately meet needs • In depth details are covered at the Housing Brief when checking in or by contacting ???? • Grocery shopping • There is a base Commissary & NEX that provides a vast range of commonly used US items. (You Tube Video Link) • Many Off-base stores provide comparable items for our use Japan Sustainment Road-show
Local (cont) • Driving/Transportation; • You will be able to get a POV drivers license if desired • Public transportation; • Trains and Buses run extremely efficient and timely schedules • They are coordinated in many cases to compliment arrival and departure times • Majority of buses originate or end at train stations • Many people use the train schedules as the standard to set their personal clocks by • Taxis are readily available at all train stations • Language barriers or lack of barriers; • Learning the Japanese Language can be quite a task • Many Japanese can speak English and the need to be fluent in Japanese is not required • A little bit of Japanese goes a long way in making friends with the Local populace and you can learn some when attending the AOBICR class after arriving Japan Sustainment Road-show
Local (cont) • Cultural classes • Area Orientation Brief and Inter-Cultural Relations (AOBICR) is a mandatory 5 day class ALL arriving personnel have to attend • Sight seeing possibilities • Great Japanese sightseeing within easy commute or train rides • Tours to other countries • Great opportunity to visit other countries • Weather • General conditions are similar to NorfolkVA • Typhoons 1-5 per year • Earthquakes common • Tsunamis are rare but can occure • Friendship days • Days that the base is open to the local populace and usually is a festive atmosphere.
