  2. What is DTP • DTP stands for Desktop Publishing. • You use DTP software to produce professional-looking documents such as reports, books, posters or leaflets. • DTP software gives you more control over the layout of a page than a word processor and lets you easily integrate graphics into your publications.

  3. Hardware Equipment Needed Here is the basic equipment you need for a complete DTP system

  4. The Software Needed As with any application SOFTWARE is needed. Here is a list of the popular ones available: Adobe Adobe PageMaker Corel Corel Ventura Microsoft Microsoft Office Publisher Quark QuarkXPress Serif Serif PagePlus

  5. Features of DTP • Page Layout : The ability to define the layout of a page using frames to place text and pictures in. • Fonts and Styles : All the normal Windows fonts and styles. • Drawing Facilities : Some drawing facilities, although these may be limited – best to IMPORT them • Importing Pictures and Text : The ability to incorporate pictures and text from other packages into a document. • Clipart : A library of pictures for you to include in your documents. • Accurate Positioning : The ability to position objects extremely accurately on the page using guidelines or a grid.

  6. Features – Page Layout The main feature of DTP is the way the Page is set out. Typically, the page is arranged into FRAMES. A frame can usually contain either text or a picture (but not both). A frame can be positioned and resized independently of all of the other frames. DTP can be regarded as a method of laying out various objects, best created in other application packages.

  7. What you get with DTP software You will receive all or more than the following: • A Collection of Templates – DTP files that have layouts prepared for you. They normally come with styles ready to use • Style Sheets – these will help make the main text, headings and sub-headings consistent. When you have created such a text box, you can save the style you have used as a style sheet which can used over again • Scalable Fonts – These fonts give you a range of styles and sizes. Each font size is 1/72 of an inch. So font size 36 is 36/72 inch.

  8. Advantages of DTP • You will have much better control on how the layout of text and pictures are arranged compared with a word processor. • DTP has a great ability to bring together work created in other packages such as word processors and graphics packages • It can allow a very professional and eye catching way of producing material, whether a written publication or even a web site

  9. When do we use DTP You can typically use DTP for the following types of publications: Posters Greeting Cards Magazines Invitations Web Sites Labels Newsletters Postcards Business Cards Brochures Forms Fliers
