  2. 1. “I did a terrible thing….” I begin and explain about the pillows in my b ed and the burglar bars, and as I tell him I begin to feel my world crashing around me. I can’t believe that I could be so devious. (Ch. 27, p 112) a. Using direct speech and starting with the words, “I did a terrible thing…” write down what Katy told Ricardo and Rasta she had done to get out of the house.

  3. Answer • “I did a terrible thing. I unscrewed the burglar bars. I put pillows in my bed so that it would look as if I was sleeping there. I then climbed through the window and left.”

  4. b. What does the word “devious” mean? Answer: Not straightforward, not honest.

  5. 2a) How did Katy’s mother die? • She had an aneurysm. An artery burst in her brain and she died from the bleeding.

  6. 2b) How doesHector’s story about their fights relate to Katy’s nightmares? • Katy always dreamed of her mom falling down the stairs. She thought Hector pushed her mom but he did not. Katy could not remember that her mom did not die from the fall.

  9. b) Explain how she uses exaggeration (hyperbole) in this comment. She says she will die if she does not see Ricardo. That is exaggeration. She will not really die.

  10. c) Why does Katy have “his” jacket? The night Ricardo dropped Katy off at her house it was raining. He insisted that she take his jacket.

  11. d) When does she see “him” again? Ricardo is the one who comes to pick her up when she escapes from Wesley.

  12. 4. I get into the car very eagerly but immediately notice something is wrong. (Ch. 30, p125) • In your own words, describe what Katy feels when she gets into the car. She does not like the guy sitting at the back because he puts his arm around her shoulders all the time.

  13. b. Do you think she should have stayed in the car if she felt this way? Explain your answer. No. She should have trusted her instinct and left.

  14. c. Briefly describe what happens on that journey. Wesley holds her hand and calls her his girlfriend. They look for someone called Lange. Wesley takes her to the old factory.

  15. 5a). Why do you think so much Afrikaans and slang is used at the beginning of Chapter 31? • It is the way the people talk there. • It helps you to identify the different characters.

  16. 5b). In general, do you think that the use of Afrikaans and slang improves the story or not? Explain your answer. • Yes. It makes the characters more realistic and believable.

A sub-plot is another strand of the story, usually of minor characters.Explain how the story of Zeke’s addiction to tik and Auntie Rose’s attempt to find Hector a partner form sub-plots in this novel. You follow Zeke’s addiction from the beginning to the end. You follow Auntie Rose’s attempts with interest.

  19. 8). A lot happens in the last third of the novel. Draw a timeline and mark off the five key (most important) moments in this section. (32-36)

  20. 9). How effective do you find the ending to this novel? Do you think it is realistic or far-fetched? Explain your answer in full. The ending to the novel sounds real. It is realistic. It is possible for Ricardo to go overseas and it is possible for Katy to decide to finish school. It is possible for Hector to like Brenda.
