  5. Tip #1 • Look for words in the passage that have a similar meaning. • These words are called synonyms. • List three synonyms for the word hate.

  6. Tip #2 • Look for words that have the meaning opposite to that of the unknown word. • These words are called antonyms Example: Not all commercial websites are untrustworthy. Indeed, many commercial sites are reputable sources of information on the topics they discuss. • What words are opposite of reputable? • So what does reputable most likely mean? A. Useful B. Reliable C. Suspicious D. Complicated

  7. Tip #3 • Plug in the answer choices to see which one makes the most sense in the sentence. Example: At last it began to grown cold, so cold that in the early morning he was obliged to put one hand in his pocket to keep it warm, while holding the plough with the other. • In this passage obliged means A. Told B. Forced C. Asked

  8. Tip #4 and #5 • Don’t be fooled by multiple meaning words! 5. Look for hints the author gives to the meaning of the word. • Check footnotes • Check for definitions right in the text DUH!!!!!

  9. Tip #6 • Use a dictionary to find out the meaning of the word. • No, you can’t do this on the benchmark, but if it is a vocabulary question on the benchmark one of the other strategies should work.
